Forward-looking: This week, the founder of the world's leading chip manufacturer commented on geopolitical factors driving changes in the semiconductor industry. While he voiced support for recent US sanctions on Chinese chip imports, his comments mostly framed issues based on whether they benefitted TSMC. At the CommonWealth Semiconductor Forum, TSMC founder Morris Chang joined a discussion about segmentation and specialization in the chip industry this week. He supports recent US sanctions in China but expressed doubts about the country's efforts to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing. Chang estimates chip manufacturing in mainland China is about five or six years behind Taiwan and applauds the American sanctions because they will keep it that way. The sanctions, enacted over the last year, are designed to restrict China's development of supercomputers and other hardware for military purposes. Last year, the US imposed import restrictions on various Chinese … [Read more...] about TSMC founder Morris Chang supports China chip sanctions, but voices doubts on Chips Act

Former Trump official claims the US would destroy TSMC plants were China to invade Taiwan
Why it matters: The idea that the US would destroy Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing facilities to keep them out of China's hands in the event of an invasion has resurfaced. The very mention of such a drastic measure highlights the volatility of tensions surrounding the three countries, but TSMC thinks its factories could be neutralized much less violently. Former US National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien told Semafor this week that the US and its allies would destroy TSMC's manufacturing capacity in Taiwan if they failed to prevent China from invading and taking over the self-ruled island. O'Brien warned that letting China take control of the facilities would give it too much power, but TSMC disagrees. TSMC is easily the world's largest maker of the semiconductors that power most computerized devices today. As such, its fate and the subsequent effects on the global economy are a primary issue of concern regarding tensions between China, Taiwan, and the US. China considers … [Read more...] about Former Trump official claims the US would destroy TSMC plants were China to invade Taiwan

vietnam: SpaceX, Netflix, Boeing to join “biggest-ever” US business mission to Vietnam
SpaceX, Netflix and Boeing are among the companies joining the "biggest-ever" US business mission to Vietnam next week to discuss investment and sales opportunities in the booming Southeast Asian nation, the organiser said. More than 50 companies, including defence, pharmaceutical and tech firms, will participate in the mission organised by the US-ASEAN Business Council, an industry body, according to a list seen by Reuters. The delegation is a sign of rising interest in the global manufacturing hub, which is benefiting from a shift away from China amid Sino-US trade friction. Vietnam, with a population of 100 million people, also has a rapidly-growing consumer market as its middle class expands. "This is the biggest-ever mission in Vietnam," said Vu Tu Thanh , the US-ASEAN Business Council's representative in the country, noting that the body had been organising these events for three decades. Streaming giant Netflix, which Reuters last month … [Read more...] about vietnam: SpaceX, Netflix, Boeing to join “biggest-ever” US business mission to Vietnam
Google tells users of some Android phones: Nuke voice calling to avoid infection
Google is urging owners of certain Android phones to take urgent action to protect themselves from critical vulnerabilities that give skilled hackers the ability to surreptitiously compromise their devices by making a specially crafted call to their number. It’s not clear if all actions urged are even possible, however, and even if they are, the measures will neuter devices of most voice-calling capabilities. The vulnerability affects Android devices that use the Exynos chipset made by Samsung’s semiconductor division. Vulnerable devices include the Pixel 6 and 7, international versions of the Samsung Galaxy S22, various mid-range Samsung phones, the Galaxy Watch 4 and 5, and cars with the Exynos Auto T5123 chip. These devices are ONLY vulnerable if they run the Exynos chipset, which includes the baseband that processes signals for voice calls. The US version of the Galaxy S22 runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. A bug tracked as CVE-2023-24033 and three others that have yet to … [Read more...] about Google tells users of some Android phones: Nuke voice calling to avoid infection

For new hardware companies, waiting is the hardest part
In context: The biggest difference between building hardware and software is the amount of time it takes to get to first revenue. There are no easy ways to shorten this, but there are ways to adapt and ease the path to revenue growth. We obviously have strong biases when it comes to the benefits of investing in hardware versus investing in software. And we have some strong opinions on the investment cases for each being much more similar than the common wisdom holds. Nonetheless, there are obvious differences between the two, and we want to explore those differences with the end goal of finding ways to de-risk hardware investing, or the least, finding accommodations to level out long-term outcomes. Editor's Note: Jonathan Goldberg is the founder of D2D Advisory, a multi-functional consulting firm. Jonathan has developed growth strategies and alliances for companies in the mobile, networking, gaming, and software industries. Unquestionably, one of the biggest benefits of … [Read more...] about For new hardware companies, waiting is the hardest part
This miniature chip is being used in a saliva-monitoring sensor that attaches to your tooth
In brief: Silicon Labs, the fabless semiconductor designer and manufacturer, has announced a system on a chip that's so small it's being used for a tooth-mounted salivary diagnostic sensor. The device can be utilized by dentists and other clinicians to collect important data from saliva, which is then used to test for over 1,000 health conditions. Silicon Labs says its xG27 family of Bluetooth SoCs comprises the BG27 and the BB50 microcontroller unit, both built on the ARM Cortex M33 processor and designed for the smallest of IoT devices. The former is primarily for Bluetooth connectivity, while the latter supports Zigbee and other proprietary protocols. The chips measure between 2mm-squared, about the width of a #2 pencil lead, to 5mm-squared, less than the width of a standard #2 pencil. Silicon Labs tells The Verge they only miss out on being the world's smallest Bluetooth chip by "fractions of a millimeter." The QFN packaged xG27 SoC The BG27 is being used by … [Read more...] about This miniature chip is being used in a saliva-monitoring sensor that attaches to your tooth
