The idea of threats to Earth from outer space sounds like science fiction, but at some level our planet has always been vulnerable to them — think of the giant asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Fortunately, such occurrences are extremely rare; but other natural phenomena, such as solar storms, can strike from space much more frequently. These have little direct effect on living things, but they can wreak havoc on electronic systems we increasingly depend on, particularly satellite-based technologies. To make matters worse, the proliferation of human-made satellites has created a space hazard of its own, as the loads of orbiting debris have the potential to destroy other satellites. Related: Debris from SpaceX rocket launch falls on farm in central Washington In the U.S., tackling these threats is the responsibility of several organizations: Both NASA and the U.S. Space Force tracks space debris; the National Oceanic and Atmospheric … [Read more...] about How are asteroids, space weather and space debris detected before they hit Earth?

Google has worked with the team over Carnegie Mellon University's Create Lab to bring timelapse videos to Google Earth, which the tech giant says is the biggest update the company has made to the platform since 2017. According to Rebecca Moore, Earth Engine and Outreach director of Google Earth, Timelapse has been developed using 24 million satellite images from the past 37 years -- from 1984 to 2020 -- before being compiled into an interactive 4D experience. "Making a planet-sized timelapse video required a significant amount of what we call 'pixel crunching' in Earth Engine, Google's cloud platform for geospatial analysis … it took more than 2 million processing hours across thousands of machines in Google Cloud to compile 20 petabytes of satellite imagery into a single 4.4 terapixel-sized video mosaic -- that's the equivalent of 530,000 videos in 4K resolution," she explained in a blog post . She explained introducing Timelapse is "about zooming out to assess the health and … [Read more...] about Google introduces Timelapse to Google Earth
HBO Max is the premium network's streaming service featuring all the channel's regular programming plus an amped-up library of extra shows, movies and originals. Huawei Technologies will continue to diversify its product focus as it looks to buffer a decline in its smartphone sales, with its other connected devices including laptops and smart TVs seeing strong growth this past year. The Chinese tech giant also believes its wide product portfolio will stack well against its local peers, such as Alibaba and Tencent--all of which are looking to grow their footprint in the Southeast Asian region. Huawei reported sluggish performance in its recent earnings report , where its annual operating profit fell for the first time in over five years to 72.5 billion yuan ($11.09 billion) in 2020. China also was the only region it saw revenue climb by 15.4% to 585 billion yuan, with all other regions, which included Asia-Pacific, EMEA, and Americas, seeing dips in revenue of between 8.7% and almost 25%. Huawei attributed the loss to a dip in its smartphone sales, which were impacted by ongoing US export sanctions that blocked access to Google's Android … [Read more...] about Huawei looks to diversify product focus, confident against Chinese cloud players
