Microsoft's latest Windows 10 19H1 Insider Preview for the fast ring expands the availability of password-less sign-in and a revamped Windows Hello PIN reset from Windows 10 Home to all Windows 10 editions. Microsoft rolled out its new password-less sign-in option to Windows 10 Home edition insiders in December with build 18305 and, with the new 18309 build, has now made it available to insiders on all editions. The 19H1 builds are expected to be available to all Windows 10 users in the first half of 2019. With the new preview, users with a Microsoft account with a phone number can use an SMS code to sign in and set up an account, and from there use Windows Hello Face, fingerprint or a PIN to sign in. Users who don't already have a password-less phone number account can create one in the Word app on iOS or Android. Microsoft has also expanded the availability of its streamlined Windows Hello PIN reset procedure, which can be tested by clicking the 'I forgot my … [Read more...] about Windows 10: Microsoft’s plan to kill passwords moves on with new test build

It’s time for Microsoft to bring Windows 10 Mobile back from the dead
Nostalgia is a powerful thing. It has been the primary driving force behind all the major film and television releases in the last 10 years, such as with the Marvel and Star Wars film franchises. ZDNet's parent company, CBS, is no exception. It's been making quite a go of it -- taking advantage of that nostalgia trend by re-casting familiar iconic characters on Star Trek: Discovery on CBS All-Access. In CBS prime time, the revival of Hawaii Five-O is renewed for its 9th season. And now, so has Magnum, P.I., as if it was back from the dead, sans Tom Selleck's mustache.A bout of nostalgia A fondness for reviving old brands is happening with tech as well. Palm seems to think that people have the same attachment to tech legacies as we do stuff like Luke Skywalker and Mister Spock. But I digress. Most of the time, I feel that our fondness for the old comes from a frustration with the present and the complexities that often come along with it. We tend to look at old things, … [Read more...] about It’s time for Microsoft to bring Windows 10 Mobile back from the dead
Microsoft is warning users not to install rival Google Chrome or Firefox web browsers on Windows
MICROSOFT is testing a rogue pop-up that warns users not to use web browsers from rivals. The notice appears for Windows users when they try to install the Google Chrome or Mozille Firefox browsers. Instead of completing your download, it prompts you to open Microsoft Edge, the default browser for Windows 10. The message reads: "You already have Microsoft Edge – the safer, faster browser for Windows 10." There's then a big blue button that says "Open Microsoft Edge" and a smaller grey button that says "Install anyway". Below that is a message that says "Don't want to be warned in the future? Open settings." It's a creepy tactic by Microsoft to get you to stick with its own browser – rather than run off to the competition. That's no surprise: just 4.24% of desktop PCs use Microsoft Edge, compared to 67.63% for Chrome and 10.97% for Firefox. Microsoft's dodgy pop-up was first spotted by The Verge, and later confirmed to The Sun. Speaking to The Sun, a Microsoft spokesperson … [Read more...] about Microsoft is warning users not to install rival Google Chrome or Firefox web browsers on Windows
Chrome continues to dominate the browser world, while Edge gets left behind
You’re likely aware that Chrome is king of the browser world, but the extent of the lead that Google’s effort currently enjoys over its closest rival – Mozilla’s Firefox – might surprise you.Going by the latest figures from Statcounter, Chrome stands atop the browser hill with a desktop PC market share of 66.87% – that’s very nearly six times greater than Firefox’s share, which stands at 11.44%.The third place browser remains Internet Explorer on 7.13%, but the other interesting story here is the fact that Microsoft’s newer browser, Edge, which the firm is trying to push hard alongside Windows 10, seems to be flailing badly (at least according to these stats). In fact, Edge has actually fallen behind Apple’s Safari, with the latter in fourth place on 5.38%, more than a full percentage point ahead of Microsoft’s browser for Windows 10. Edge is on a rather lowly 4.16%, and doesn’t seem to be making any meaningful … [Read more...] about Chrome continues to dominate the browser world, while Edge gets left behind
Windows 10 is adding Swiftkey — laying the groundwork for dual-screen tablets
Look at this picture. Now imagine you're holding a laptop that -- instead of a keyboard -- has a second screen. Like something out of Westworld. Swiping might be a tad easier than typing, yes?Microsoft-owned SwiftKey was one of the first virtual keyboards to offer intelligent, predictive swipe-typing on Android and iOS smartphones, and now Microsoft has announced that it will become the default keyboard for touchscreen-equipped Windows 10 computers as well."SwiftKey will now power the typing experience on Windows when using the touch keyboard to write in English (United States), English (United Kingdom), French (France), German (Germany), Italian (Italy), Spanish (Spain), Portuguese (Brazil), or Russian," reads a portion of Microsoft's blog post.Which could be pretty handy if the rumors are true: Microsoft is reportedly planning to ship several new Surface tablets this year, including a new low-cost Surface slate and the dual-screen "Andromeda." Dual screens were a theme among … [Read more...] about Windows 10 is adding Swiftkey — laying the groundwork for dual-screen tablets
