A USB controller made of solid gold is surprisingly impractical. Diamond-encrusted 3D glasses could scratch. A platinum iPad stylus could be mistaken for any old piece of aluminum. If you really want people to know that you care about your electronics way more than your bank account, the Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E. 7 is exactly what you’re looking for. Some of the S.T.R.I.K.E. 7’s features, like its built-in wrist rest and programmable buttons, are nothing special. Others, like the dramatic modularity of the unit and swappable keys, are fun but hardly drool-worthy. And the membrane keyboard designed to imitate a mechanical without the noise is very much a wait-and-see for those of us who crave a little finger soreness. But the OLED touchscreen with integrated software is so nifty is almost justifies the $300 that Mad Catz is asking for a keyboard. The touchscreen has some features you’d expect to be on buttons, like media playback and brightness controls. But it also features … [Read more...] about MadCatz S.T.R.I.K.E. 7 keyboard is as gratuitous as they come
Given the massive mainstream success of Fox’s Empire, you just knew that the never-ending quest to create more stories and produce more content would spawn a slew of imitators. So it’s no surprise that Showtime and Lionsgate TV are currently developing a new music-biz-based show. And the network seems to have an interesting angle to explore, and a couple of big names on board to boot.According to Deadline, comedian Kevin Hart and rapper T.I. (aka, Clifford Joseph Harris Jr.) will executive produce and occasionally guest star in an upcoming comedy called The Studio. The show will reportedly center around the unusual lifestyle led by those in the recording business and the charismatic, often offbeat characters who are drawn to it. In other words, get ready to turn the standard workday on its head with a little 5-to-9 action. While T.I.’s music industry chops are unassailable, Hart’s involvement in this one seems slightly less obvious. Devoted fans of the … [Read more...] about Kevin Hart, T.I. to produce, guest star on Showtime’s upcoming music biz comedy

Volkswagen’s SUVs all start with T. There’s the big Touareg and the smaller Tiguan. Now, there’s the T-ROC compact SUV concept. While the Touareg is named for a nomadic peoples and the Tiguan is an amalgam of Tiger and Iguana (I wish I were making that up), the T-ROC moniker is a bit different. The “T” in T-ROC comes from the CUV’s T-top roof. And the “ROC” reflects the car’s off-road aspirations. The three-door T-ROC is powered by a 2.0-liter TDI engine ripped from the frame rails of the Golf GTD, the diesel-powered version of the GTI. The torque-y little diesel four-banger rumbles out 181 horsepower. A bit light on power, the engine will still glide the T-ROC up to 62 mph from a dead standstill in 6.9 seconds and onto a top speed of 130 mph.You might never know how fast you’re actually going, though. The all-digital instrument cluster speedometer tops out at 50 mph when in “offroad” mode. I guess VW doesn’t … [Read more...] about VW’s T-ROC concept has T-tops and crawls over rocks, get it? As robotics technology progresses, the companies on the forefront of innovation all face the same critical question: What do you want your robot to accomplish? For the Hong Kong-based company NXRobo, the answer to this question appears to come in the form of a smart home robot that could easily pass as a distant relative of R2-D2. Dubbed the Big-I, this at-home electronic butler boasts a wide array of available features which, when boiled down, essentially make it a smart home adopter’s universal remote — one that walks, talks, and listens. In other words, it’s as if Amazon’s Alexa wasn’t confined to a kitchen counter and could follow you around the house.Though NXRobo has yet to officially launch its innovative Big-I, the company has designed an interactive website geared toward giving potential buyers a small taste of what to expect. According to the site, Big-I is made up of three major components: the NXRobo operating system (NXRobo OS), … [Read more...] about NXRobo’s Big-I is the robotic butler you’ve always wanted around the house

Unfortunately, I think I'm part of a group that is becoming extinct. Regardless of which party holds office in the U.S., my true hope is for its success, because I have this twisted view that if we have successful president, we'll have a better quality of life. Unfortunately, both of the U.S. parties seem to be competing as to which can screw up the country more effectively and, at the moment, the Democrats are winning, largely because they control government.Last week, the current sitting trainwreck stopped off to visit the most successful technology CEO we currently have -- something I suggested some time ago -- and I hope he learned a couple of things. I'll revisit that topic this week as many of us decide whether to vote out the current set of bums only to replace them with a new set.I'll close with my product of the week: a robotic vacuum cleaner that may be smarter than many of the folks running for or holding office. Early last year, I was becoming concerned that the new … [Read more...] about OPINION Obama’s Visit With Steve Jobs: Here’s What I Hope He Learned
I chuckled when I first heard of AT&T's plan to buy T-Mobile. Just days before, I had written that AT&T's movement toward phasing out unlimited data plans for the iPhone and its broadband Internet offerings was a sign that the telecommunications services that have become such an integral part of our daily lives were about to get a lot more expensive. When I wrote that, literally one week ago, I assumed it would take a while -- maybe a year or three -- before the entire industry turned to metered plans and started forcing us to make hard choices about how we consume data. But if AT&T actually does take over T-Mobile, the day when you'll want to become intimately familiar with the "check my account" feature on your smartphone may be approaching even faster than I imagined.By the way, you T-Mobile Android users, there's a free app in the Android Market that gives you an easy-to-read running tally of all of your voice and data usage. I'm a T-Mobile customer, and I currently use … [Read more...] about OPINION AT&T’s T-Mobile Plans: Who’s Looking Out for Consumers?
