The Leipzig/Halle Airport in Schkeuditz, Saxony was the location for the 15 minute long IMAX battle scene between Captain America and Iron Man. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, 1968 Based on the book by Ian Fleming and starring Dick Van Dyke, this may be a classic British musical, but in fact it has two main German shooting locations. Chinese Media: Khashoggi Disappearance Tests U.S. Commitment to Human Rights
China is not sitting the Khashoggi imbroglio out. On Tuesday, the state-run Global Times declared Jamal Khashoggi’s disappearance after visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul is a test of America’s commitment to human rights. The Chinese editorialists relished the opportunity to throw human rights language back in America’s face, claiming the cautious response of the Trump administration to Khashoggi’s possible abduction or murder proves American complaints about Chinese oppression are entirely hypocritical:US President Donald Trump’s attitude is intriguing to contemplate. On the one hand, he promised “severe punishment” if Saudi Arabian government’s involvement in the journalist’s death is confirmed. But on the other, he said he does not favor stopping arms sales to Saudi Arabia. After a phone call with King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Trump suggested “rogue killers” were to blame. The crisis has shown how human rights … [Read more...] about Chinese Media: Khashoggi Disappearance Tests U.S. Commitment to Human Rights

Genre Films Clean Up At the 2018 Academy Awards
For decades now the Academy Awards have developed a reputation for being pretty elitist. On paper they reward the best films of the year but in reality Oscars tend to go to a certain kind of great film. Stuffy costume dramas, reverent historical epics, social issues films that aren’t too provocative, movies about how cool Hollywood already is, limited-release movies typically only seen by the old folks who make up the Academy itself. These movies aren’t (usually) bad by any means, but “Oscar-bait” only makes up a fraction of what the art form can offer. Fortunately, ever since expanding the potential number of Best Picture winners following the snub of The Dark Knight, we’ve seen more and more genre films (sci-fi, horror, fantasy) sneak their way into the Oscars. Mad Max: Fury Road rightfully cleaned up in 2015. The recently revealed 2018 Academy Award winners, and even just the field of nominees, continue this promising trend for fans of freaky cinema. … [Read more...] about Genre Films Clean Up At the 2018 Academy Awards
