The Chromium Project will support the Rust programming language

January 13, 2023 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

Something to look forward to: Created by software developer Graydon Hoare while working at Mozilla Research in 2006, Rust keeps growing in popularity and winning new supporters among big tech corporations. Even Google is now looking at integrating the new(ish) language in its Chrome browser. Rust was sponsored and supported by Mozilla as a way to build a new, more secure and better performing web browser. Now, Google will soon start using the language for its own Chromium project, which means Mountain View is seemingly preparing a more secure future for the ubiquitous Chrome browser. Chrome Security Team member Dana Jansens announced the new development through Google's Security Blog. Moving forward, the Chromium project is going to support libraries written in Rust. The developers are already working on a production Rust toolchain to add to the Chrome build system, which should bring actual Rust code to Chrome binary files "within the next year." Rust is a modern, … [Read more...] about The Chromium Project will support the Rust programming language

Apple rolled out iOS 16 .3 update for all eligible iPhone users. One of the main features of iOS 16.3 is support for security keys for users' Apple ID. Security keys add another layer of security to user data and privacy. Wondering what are security keys? Here we tell all you need to know about them: What are security keys? Security keys are physical devices that are used as a form of two-factor authentication (2FA) to provide an extra layer of security when accessing online accounts or services. They work by requiring the user to physically insert the key into their device, or by using near-field communication ( NFC ) technology to connect wirelessly to a device, in order to confirm their identity. How are security keys helpful? Security keys are particularly useful in protecting against phishing attacks, which are common tactics used by attackers to steal login credentials. Phishing attacks often involve tricking users into entering their … [Read more...] about Explained: What are security keys and how they are useful

OAN loses key ruling in suit claiming DirecTV broke deal by dropping network

January 16, 2023 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

One America News Network's owner lost a key ruling in a lawsuit against DirecTV over the TV provider's decision to drop OAN from its channel lineup. OAN-owner Herring Networks had sued DirecTV and its owner AT&T in March 2022 , claiming breach of contract. The lawsuit always seemed like an uphill battle for Herring Networks because DirecTV didn't take OAN off the air while they still had a carriage agreement. Instead, DirecTV waited until the carriage agreement expired and chose not to renew it. Most of OAN's claims were thrown out in a ruling issued last week by Judge John Meyer of California Superior Court in San Diego County. DirecTV had filed an anti-SLAPP (strategic lawsuits against public participation) motion to strike the Herring Networks complaint; DirecTV's motion was granted in part and denied in part. "As to the breach of the implied covenant claim, to the extent it is based on the non-renewal of the Affiliation Agreement, the claim fails because the agreement … [Read more...] about OAN loses key ruling in suit claiming DirecTV broke deal by dropping network

Audio player loading… We would always expect smartphones to get better year on year, but if the latest rumors around the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 are to be believed, the foldable handset is going to come with a key improvement in terms of its design. According to South Korean outlet Naver (opens in new tab) (via SamMobile (opens in new tab) ), Samsung is going to use a waterdrop shape hinge in the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which means the device would be able to fold completely flat, with no gaps between the two halves of the display. Several handsets from Chinese manufacturers already use this design approach for their foldables, but at the cost of full water resistance. However, Samsung is apparently going to add the new hinge shape while maintaining an IPX8 rating for the phone. Even more durable The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is a great foldable phone, and we wouldn't say it has any durability problems, but a waterdrop hinge means less stress on the display … [Read more...] about The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 might come with a key design upgrade

iOS 16.3 and macOS Ventura 13.2 add hardware security key support

Apple released iOS and iPadOS 16.3, macOS Ventura 13.2, and watchOS 9.3 today. The updates focus primarily on bug fixes and under-the-hood improvements, but there is one notable addition: Apple ID got support for hardware security keys. Further Reading 2023 MacBook Pro review: A refined second generation Once they've updated to the new software, a user can opt to make a device like a YubiKey a required part of the two-factor authentication process for their account. It's unlikely most users will take advantage of this, of course, but for a select few, the extra security is welcome. Other additions in iOS 16.3 include support for the upcoming new HomePod model, a tweak to how Emergency SOS calls are made, and a new Black History Month wallpaper. On the Mac side, hardware security key support is joined by the rollout of Rapid Security Response, a means for urgent security updates to be delivered to Macs without issuing a major software update. Do mechanical keyboards really need arrow keys?

January 26, 2023 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

Which keys are absolutely essential to a keyboard? Many will tell you the entire numpad is, while others demand macro keys. I personally insist on a volume knob for my home office setup. And as someone who has tested 60 percent keyboards, which have no numpad or arrow keys, I'd add that for productivity and my sanity, arrow keys are also mandatory. Arrow-less keyboards have their market, but for the vast majority, no arrows on a keyboard is a deal-breaker. A mechanical keyboard Angry Miao announced today asks us to consider an alternative, though. Instead of arrow keys or relying on a key combo for arrow input (like most 60 percent keyboard users do), it has a capacitive touch panel on the front edge for inputting arrow and other functions with your thumbs. Is Angry Miao on to something here? It’s not about the keyboard Before we dive into this intriguing touchpad, let's get something out of the way: You probably don't want to buy the Angry Miao AM Compact Touch wireless … [Read more...] about Do mechanical keyboards really need arrow keys?
