THE APPLE WATCH is one of the most successful timepieces of modern times, but one thing that's held some people back from buying it is its square face design. However, that could all be about to change. Apple has been awarded a patent for technology intended for use in a circular display, suggesting that the next iteration of the world's most popular smartwatch will move away from the rectangular-shaped face seen in the last three products. The patent text specifically references a wristwatch as one application for the circular display, but the patent itself is related to the design of pixels, so that they can more efficiently work on screens with curved edges. Apple was granted a patent for a round display that is likely intended for the Apple wearable.The design of the Apple Watch has hardly changed since it first launched in 2015, with each new generation keeping the rectangular body and display. But as Patently Apple points out, it's worth noting that this patent was initially filed after the original Apple Watch released, so it's not just a patent for an Apple product that never came to be. It's possible that Apple wanted to secure this patent as an alternative design, just in case it planned on making a round Apple Watch.The patent includes some images of what the circular display could look like.
