Slack's billing growth, a key indicator of future revenue, slowed in the second quarter and the workplace messaging app owner said it took a $11 million hit in the first half due to the Covid-19 related concessions. The company said it offered credits, payment in installments and billing duration of less than a year to help users tide over the economic downturn triggered by the health crisis, sending its shares down 18% after the bell. Slack had in the previous quarter signaled weak demand from worst-affected industries like retail and travel, prompting it to withdraw its full-year billings target. "In Q2, growth in many of our customers contracted or flattened versus normal seasonal trends. In August, growth began to trend at more typical seasonal levels," Chief Financial Officer Allen Shim said in a call with analysts. Slack's quarterly billings rose 25%, but it fell short of the 38% growth it posted in the first quarter. Billings are an important metric for growth for a … [Read more...] about Slack’s quarterly billing growth slows due to Covid-19 concessions

Evaluating the Villain: As in previous weeks, it’s hard to measure Negan’s growth as a villain if he doesn’t show up for work. It’d be one thing if actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan were only a supporting cast member, contracted for a certain number of episodes per season and playing a diminished supporting role. That would explain the mind-boggling choice to have him in only two episodes this season so far. But as the biggest, baddest villain in the series, his absence is inexplicable. It’s also befuddling after last week’s episode. “The Big Bad U” proved that TWD can do better, and the only takeaway from “The King, The Widow, and Rick” is that the show is choosing not to. Perhaps it’s related to budget constraints or adaptation issues, but whatever the reason it makes for frustrating television. … [Read more...] about The Walking Dead Villain Watch season 8, episode 6: The King, the Widow, and Rick
Rick and Jadis redux Last week Rick found himself trapped again by Jadis and her group of garbage dump-dwellers, and “Time for After” checks in with the pair throughout its running time. Rick is routinely trotted out half-naked from a shipping container to be photographed by Jadis for “sculpting” purposes, and is flatly ignored when he offers her a deal. The situation comes to a head when Jadis finally decides to execute Rick by putting him up against another gladiator-style walker with a spike-ridden helmet, similar to the battle he faced last season. It’s another effective Mad Max-style sequence, building on Jadis’ cult-like ritualism and offbeat linguistic quirks. Rick, of course, manages to turn the walker against Jadis to coerce her into negotiating, and she finally agrees to help — on the condition that she get one-fourth of the Saviors’ supplies. … [Read more...] about The Walking Dead Villain Watch season 8, episode 7: Time for After
It would have at least been interesting if the show failed at those goals in spectacular fashion. Instead, it’s mostly spun its wheels, neither course-correcting nor going all-in on one particular narrative strategy. That’s made for a frustrating season where the big moments have all been forgettable and the subplots have been circuitous and dull. Maybe the show was always destined to devolve into a passable comic book adaptation. But it was not so long ago The Walking Dead was praised for its ability to take risks. At this point it’s not clear to me what a risk would even look like, save knocking Rick off and installing a new main character — something I’m sure will never happen. … [Read more...] about The Walking Dead Redemption Club season 7, episode 16: The First Day of the Rest of Your Life
