The update to Android 9 Pie with a new One UI interface is the biggest visual change Samsung has pushed to its phones in years. Alongside all of the requisite improvements you expect with any software update, Samsung's Pie release makes substantial changes to the look and operation of the entire software experience. But naturally, much of Samsung's legacy software is here to stay as well, making sure you'll never forget what kind of phone you're using. This is how it all comes together in Samsung's latest software: One UI and Android 9 Pie. Samsung One UI What I like Every couple generations, Samsung makes a big step forward in software design and capabilities. I'd argue that Samsung's software got good starting with Android 5.0 Lollipop on the Galaxy S6; but it really only stepped up to being great with Android 7.0 Nougat on the Galaxy S8. One UI with Android 9 Pie is undoubtedly another major step forward. One UI is effectively a complete redo of Samsung's interface, colors and … [Read more...] about Samsung One UI (Android 9 Pie) review: Samsung’s best software yet

If you have a late-model Samsung phone on US Cellular, odds are pretty good that there's a software update waiting for you. The Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 flagships are getting an updated build of KitKat, along with the last-gen Galaxy Note 3. Don't get your hopes too high: all three phones will still be running Android 4.4.2 after the update. But Samsung is pushing out a few incremental changes, notably for the dialer and camera. According to the update notes, a lot of the tweaks are specifically for Google-related services, notably the ability to "search for nearby places and businesses, your contacts, or people in your Google Apps domain." The new builds have Google Hangouts included, complete with SMS integration (not that you couldn't do it for yourself before). "Ok Google" hotword detection is enabled by default in Google Search (again, not that you couldn't do that yourself) and the camera app for all three phones now has touch-to-focus with enhanced controls for focus and … [Read more...] about US Cellular Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3, And Galaxy Note 4 Get New Dialer, Updated Camera App, And More In The Latest OTA

Fowler | The Washington Post MADISON, Wis. – What happens to gadgets when you’re done with them? Too often, they explode. As we enter new-gadget buying season, spare a moment to meet the people who end up handling your old stuff. Isauro Flores-Hernandez, who takes apart used smartphones and tablets for a living, keeps thick gloves, metal tongs and a red fireproof bin by his desk here at Cascade Asset Management, an electronics scrap processor. Last year, his co-worker had to slide away an exploding iPad battery and evacuate the area while it burned out. I had been eyeing the company since the original Galaxy S, checking what it's doing and waiting for it to be convincing before I dipped my toes and grabbed the S3. I liked the rounded design, even though everyone criticized it. I loved the powerful hardware too, but I hated TouchWiz. It took me two weeks to get fed up, root the phone, flash a custom recovery, and start trying different custom ROMs that removed some of the bloat and smoothed the experience. When the Galaxy S4 was announced and later the S5, I wasn't remotely convinced by them. They … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Review, Take 2: Not Only Convincing, But Nearing Perfection
