Microsoft alleges attacks on French magazine came from Iranian-backed group
Microsoft said on Friday that an Iranian nation-state group already sanctioned by the US government was behind an attack last month that targeted the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo and thousands of its readers. The attack came to light on January 4, when a previously unknown group calling itself Holy Souls took to the Internet to claim it had obtained a Charlie Hebdo database that contained personal information for 230,000 of its customers. The post said the database was available for sale at the price of 20 BTC, or roughly $340,000 at the time. The group also released a sample of the data that included the full names, telephone numbers, and home and email addresses of people who had subscribed to, or purchased merchandise from, the publication. French media confirmed the veracity of the leaked data. The release of the sample put the customers at risk of online targeting or physical violence by extremist groups, which have retaliated against Charlie Hebdo in recent … [Read more...] about Microsoft alleges attacks on French magazine came from Iranian-backed group

Malicious use of Microsoft OneNote documents on the rise
Audio player loading… The use of Microsoft OneNote documents to distribute malware to unsuspecting users is picking up pace, cybersecurity researchers from Proofpoint have claimed. OneNote is Microsoft’s digital note-taking app, which comes as part of the Office productivity suite. As such, cybercriminals can assume that most of their victims already have the app installed on their endpoints . OneNote’s files, called NoteBooks, allow users to add attachments, which can download malware from remote locations. All users need to do is double-click the file, which they can be easily tricked into doing. Recent reports saw hackers distribute blurred NoteBooks with the message “double-click to view the contents”, tricking victims into believing the file’s contents are being protected. Low detection rates In a detailed report published on the company blog earlier this week, Proofpoint’s researchers said they identified six campaigns in December 2022, using OneNote to … [Read more...] about Malicious use of Microsoft OneNote documents on the rise
Hackers use new IceBreaker malware to breach gaming companies
Audio player loading… A new malware campaign targeting gaming and gambling companies has been reported and codenamed IceBreaker. The attackers contact the customer support section of the companies online to seemingly raise an issue. They attach a 'screenshot' to highlight their 'problem', which contains a backdoor - previously unseen by experts - to hack their endpoint . The attacks have been reported since September 2022, and although the group behind them remains a mystery, some of their actions - such as requesting to speak to customer service agents in languages other than English - may be clues to their identity. Police Crackdown on ‘Far-Right’ Promised As Migrant Protests Grow
Police in Ireland are expected to launch a crackdown against so-called “far-right agitators” amid the continued growth of anti-mass immigration protests throughout the country. An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police force, are reportedly expected to make a significant number of arrests in the near future as part of a crackdown on so-called “far-right agitators”, a report on Thursday has claimed. It comes as unrest in the country grows over the Irish government’s open borders approach to its ongoing migrant crisis, which has seen tens of thousands of migrants from Ukraine and beyond arrive in the country which has a smaller population than many individual U.S. states. With a growing number of large protests taking place in various regions across the island nation every single night, many authorities and officials have been keen to suggest that the protests — which are grassroots in nature — are in fact being orchestrated by a shadowy “far-right” . Now, with one … [Read more...] about Police Crackdown on ‘Far-Right’ Promised As Migrant Protests Grow
Until further notice, think twice before using Google to download software
Searching Google for downloads of popular software has always come with risks, but over the past few months, it has been downright dangerous, according to researchers and a pseudorandom collection of queries. “Threat researchers are used to seeing a moderate flow of malvertising via Google Ads,” volunteers at Spamhaus wrote on Thursday . “However, over the past few days, researchers have witnessed a massive spike affecting numerous famous brands, with multiple malware being utilized. This is not ‘the norm.’” One of many new threats: MalVirt The surge is coming from numerous malware families, including AuroraStealer, IcedID , Meta Stealer, RedLine Stealer, Vidar, Formbook, and XLoader. In the past, these families typically relied on phishing and malicious spam that attached Microsoft Word documents with booby-trapped macros. Over the past month, Google Ads has become the go-to place for criminals to spread their malicious wares that are disguised as legitimate downloads by … [Read more...] about Until further notice, think twice before using Google to download software
Tinder: Tinder owner to lay off 8 percent of its staff as growth falters
Match Group Inc joined a growing list of US companies that are cutting jobs to rein in costs after it announced plans to lay off about 8 percent of its workforce, or about 200 employees, as spending on its dating apps slows. The company gave a lacklustre quarterly revenue forecast a day earlier that it blamed on a tough economy, a strong dollar, and "significant" poor product execution at Tinder . Product delays have also hit its Hinge app at a time when competition is rising from rival Bumble Inc. The job cuts were mainly in areas such as recruiting, the company said in an email. The cuts have already taken place in the United States and are being implemented in other countries. Meta’s plans to expand metaverse are up and running again: Here’s how
Facebook-parent company Meta has reportedly received a go-ahead from a court to complete its purchase of virtual reality startup Within Unlimited, after the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sought to block the deal saying the purchase could end the competition in the market. A report by Bloomberg cited people familiar with the ruling as saying that a US judge denied the FTC’s request for a preliminary injunction to block the proposed transaction. The judge also issued a temporary restraining order that will essentially block Meta from closing the transaction for a week. This gives time to the FTC to appeal the ruling. What’s the case? In July 2022, the FTC filed a complaint to block Meta from acquiring virtual reality studio Within, which makes the popular VR app Supernatural. FTC said that the Mark Zuckerberg-owned company bought Within to end competition in the fitness market. Meta already owns Beat Saber which is a lot similar to Supernatural. Swedish Agency Warns of Increased Terrorism Threat
The Swedish Agency for Psychological Defense has warned that Sweden is in the crosshairs of foreign actors who are spreading messages that the country is a legitimate target for terror attacks. Mikael Tofvesson, head of the operations department at the Swedish Agency for Psychological Defense, stated earlier this week that attitudes toward Sweden abroad were becoming more and more aggressive. According to Tofvesson, part of the rise in aggression comes from a social media campaign by Muslims that claimed Swedish social services were kidnapping the children of Muslim families in Sweden, a phenomenon that has been ongoing since late 2021, broadcaster SVT reports .
