(Reuters) - Facebook Inc said on Thursday it had restored service to its main app and Instagram, after the world’s largest social network suffered a major outage that frustrated users across the globe for about 24 hours. The company also said it was considering whether to refund advertisers for lost exposure due to the problems, which internet outage trackers showed affected users in Europe, Japan, North and South America. “Yesterday, a server configuration issue made it difficult for people to access our apps and services. We are 100 percent back up and running and apologize for any inconvenience,” a Facebook spokesperson said. “We are still investigating the overall impact of this issue, including the possibility of refunds for advertisers.” Facebook takes tens of millions of dollars of advertising revenue every day. US citizens in multiple states can now again call 911 using a cellular network, after an outage that lasted for more than a day, the media are reporting. CenturyLink, a US telecommunications provider (one which provides internet and phone services to major cell carriers in the country), announced on Friday evening that “all consumer services impacted by this event, including voice and 911, have been restored.”A day earlier, on Thursday at noon, a disruption had caused the service to be unavailable to Seattle, Washington and Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as Idaho, Oregon, Arizona and Missouri, the media reported.CenturyLink was very stingy with words, saying only that it had an issue with a network element. A nationwide outage for CenturyLink customers, including those trying to reach 911 emergency service, dragged on for the better part of two days before its resolution late FridayThe outage hit customers of the phone, internet and TV service provider in areas including Idaho, New Mexico and Minnesota. Tech & Science Nationwide CenturyLink outages from Thursday have rolled over to Friday with thousands of users still reporting the services are down and not working. FCC chairmain Ajit Pai put out a statement at 10:47 a.m. EST Friday condemming CenturyLink's response to the outages and called for a federal investigation. "When an emergency strikes, it's critical that AMericans are able to use 911 to reach those who can help. The CenturyLink service outage is therefore completely unacceptable, and its breadth and duration are particularly troubling. I've directed the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau to immediately launch an investigation into the cause and impact of this outage," Pai's statement read. "This inquiry will include an examination of the effect that CenturyLink's outage appears to have had on other providers' 911 services.
