Police officers in Fremont, California, will soon catch bad guys without burning a drop of gasoline. The city is preparing to add a Tesla Model S to its fleet of police cruisers as part of a pilot program. The process of turning a Tesla Model S into a police cruiser began in January 2018, when the Fremont Police Department purchased a used, pre-facelift 2014 85 model for $61,478 including taxes and fees to replace a 2007 Dodge Charger that was scheduled to retire. The law enforcement agency explained it didn’t choose the Model S because Tesla’s headquarters and factory are in Fremont. The Model S was the only electric car that met the department’s size, performance, driving range, and safety requirements. It has taken Fremont police a year to turn the Model S into a cop car because the department had to work with aftermarket suppliers to develop equipment like a light bar, a push bumper, a prisoner partition, and ballistic barriers. The department pointed out … [Read more...] about The Tesla Model S reports for police cruiser duty in California

Why it matters: Tesla's decision to discontinue 75 kWh battery options on the Model S and Model X does put more distance between the most expensive Model 3 and the cheapest Model S and Model X which may be the company's ultimate goal. Tesla is phasing out the 75 kWh battery pack options for its Model S sedan and Model X SUV. Those interested in purchasing models with the entry-level battery capacity will need to place their order by Sunday night, CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter. The Tesla Model S 75D starts at $66,750 (after potential incentives and gas savings) and offers a range of 259 miles, a top speed of 140 mph and a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds. The Model X, meanwhile, starts at $72,950 with a range of 237 miles, a top speed of 130 mph and a sprint to 60 in 4.9 seconds. With the 75D trim on the way out, the next cheapest option for both vehicles is the 100D which carries an $18,000 premium on the Model S and a $15,000 premium on the Model X. Sure, you get more range, a higher top … [Read more...] about Tesla is eliminating the 75 kWh battery pack option on the Model S and Model X
If the scent of lavender and the feel of Lycra on clammy flesh are your kind of thing, you won’t find anywhere better than cycling mecca La Coquillade. Set in the hills of the Petit Luberon, a rosé-growing idyll between Avignon and Aix-en-Provence, this hotel has been created by a Tour de France team owner and attracts moneyed MAMILs with its scenic bicycle routes and experienced coaches. Correctly sizing up my level of fitness, I was invited to ride around the surrounding villages on an e-bike, meaning I could avoid my twin allergies of Lycra and physical exertion. The electric power was in keeping with my other mode of transportation for the week: A Tesla Model S 100D. I chose Provence as my destination to size-up the Model S’s charge range. The £90,000 100D has the longest range of any Tesla – up to 393 miles. Would a blast to the south of France induce range anxiety? Could it match the cross-country pace of gas-guzzling rivals from Mercedes-AMG and … [Read more...] about Tesla Model S 100D review: Only famous for its unpredictable boss or genuinely good to drive?
