The big picture: Qualcomm may be the leading mobile chipmaker at the top end of the market, but in the mid-range, the company faces serious competition from Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company MediaTek, whose SoCs have become increasingly more common in affordable devices, especially in China, India and other international markets. Qualcomm recently announced the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 mobile chipset for premium mid-range smartphones. It is the second Snapdragon 7-series SoC announced by Qualcomm, and an upgrade over last year's Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC. The company never announced a '+' variant of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, nor did it release a standard Snapdragon 7 Gen 2. Qualcomm has announced a new chipset in the mid-range Snapdragon 7-series, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. It comes as a successor to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset from 2022. The new mid-range chipset promises double the performance of its predecessor. Built on the 4nm fabrication node of TSMC , the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 chipset has a 1+3+4 architecture, with the main Kryo Cortex X-2 core clocked at up to 2.91GHz, 3x Cortex A710 cores running at up to2.49GHz, and rest 4 cores are Cortex A510 efficiency cores clocked at up to 1.8GHz. Qualcomm says that the new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 can deliver up to 50 percent more performance compared to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset. Google is urging owners of certain Android phones to take urgent action to protect themselves from critical vulnerabilities that give skilled hackers the ability to surreptitiously compromise their devices by making a specially crafted call to their number.  It’s not clear if all actions urged are even possible, however, and even if they are, the measures will neuter devices of most voice-calling capabilities. The vulnerability affects Android devices that use the Exynos chipset made by Samsung’s semiconductor division. Vulnerable devices include the Pixel 6 and 7, international versions of the Samsung Galaxy S22, various mid-range Samsung phones, the Galaxy Watch 4 and 5, and cars with the Exynos Auto T5123 chip.
