July 9, 2018 - Written By Manny Reyes Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) startup SenseTime is planning to adopt augmented reality (AR) and autonomous driving technologies as it seeks to expand beyond its facial recognition offering. Apparently, SenseTime’s AR and self-driving efforts will build upon the progress made by its existing AI algorithms used for the company’s facial recognition system. The company’s facial recognition technology is already used by law enforcement and authorities in China to detect suspected criminals and for other public safety operations. Qualcomm has launched the Snapdragon XR1 Platform and a dedicated chip for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications.The US chipmaker debuted the XR1 Platform this week during a launch event ahead of Augmented World Expo (AWE) in Santa Clara, California.Qualcomm touts the platform as the "world's first dedicated Extended Reality (XR) platform," which is intended to bring AR and VR to the mainstream in an affordable manner. Twenty-seven venture capital funds and investors are uniting to hold the Global AR Online Pitch Event, a contest aimed at identifying stellar augmented reality startups. The winning contestant will likely receive an investment from the group. Gree’s investment fund, dubbed the GFR Fund, organized the event with Super Ventures and the Venture Reality Fund. The deadline for contest entries is April 23, and contestants will submit their entries online to an audience of accredited global AR investors (listed below). Eight startups will be selected as finalists to present at the online pitch event, which will take place live before investors. Finalists will have five minutes to pitch, followed by two minutes of questions from a selected panel of investors. The finalists will also deliver live pitches at the Augmented World Expo event on May 31.
