T-Mobile 's Binge On, which enables users to stream video from select content providers without using data from their monthly allowance, sounds awesome, especially for those on a tight data allowance plan. Official word is that Binge On does this by optimizing the video streams, but in reality, the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) found out that T-Mobile also throttles the HTML5 video throughput of other providers (most probably YouTube) down to 1.5Mbps for those who have Binge On enabled. And by default, this means all T-Mobile subscibers, even those with unlimited data plans. Even T-Mobile's CEO, John Legere, had to defend Binge On from its attackers in a video . Regardless of the controversies surrounding it, it seems that Binge On is quite appreciated by Team Magenta's userbase. After all, the latter has streamed 34 petabytes of video content since the feature's arrival, which is a mind-boggling amount of data. To put it in perspective, a petabyte consist of 1024 … [Read more...] about T-Mobile adding four major content providers to Binge On, users have streamed 34 petabytes of video

While announcing new targeted ads for its users, music streamer Spotify also sent out some interesting data on how the service is used in the course of each day. Based on information gleaned from its 60 million users, Spotify members like to stream music over a mobile device when getting prepared for the day ahead. That makes sense since many use their handset or tablet as an alarm clock, and like to check their social messaging sites as soon as they awaken. That changes at around 3pm when Spotify users switch to the ol' desktop. Many are at work, using the music streaming service to provide background music. But just two hours later, when users are ready to unwind, they return to their mobile device to stream their favorite tunes. Interestingly enough, Spotify says that its peak listening periods are weekdays before 9am and after 5pm, two time periods when users prefer listening on the mobile platform.Spotify also announced that starting May 1st, it will begin targeted ads based on the … [Read more...] about Spotify listeners prefer to stream over a mobile platform in the morning and while working out
We've grown so accustomed to their presence in our daily lives that we rarely stop and appreciate what a smartphone is. In most cases, it's a reasonably powerful PC right in our pocket, which keeps us connected to all our social media, emails, and chats, it gives us a camera, always ready to capture a moment from our lives, and it provides entertainment for those dull moments when we've nothing better to do. Said entertainment can come in a few different forms. You can either have fun with your phone 's stock capabilities, playing with its camera and its cooky modes and filters (*ahem* Sony ), reading news and gossip from a built-in news bulletin, or browsing the web. But there's also the obvious choice of downloading apps and games from your respective app store. And there are a lot of entertaining apps out there. Sure, they are not labeled as "games", but camera apps like Snapchat or MSQRD, karaoke apps like Triller, or educational apps like Space Walk 2 can definitely put a … [Read more...] about What do you prefer for entertainment: apps or games?
There is a lot to like about prepaid and reseller services. Usually the rates are quite a bit less than a traditional plan from a major provider, making prepaid an appealing option for those who have to closely monitor their expenses. All prepaid services in the United States provide service as an MVNO of one of the major carriers' networks, so coverage is generally not going to be a problem. There is also no service contract, and thus no risk of an early termination fee. There are also MVNOs that provide service using the same general model as a traditional carrier, including subsidized equipment and two-year contracts. With these service providers, prices are usually more competitive than traditional products offered by the established network owners. In both cases, there are possible trade-offs though. With lower cost, there may be fewer options as to which device or devices one wants to use. Some of these companies allow you to bring your own unlocked device, but in the … [Read more...] about More than just prepaid or MVNO: These providers donate profits and proceeds to a cause
