Airbnb really wants to shut down parties in its rentals. On Tuesday, the company announced the deployment of "anti-party tools" that it claims will help identify users who are likely to throw a party and prevent them from renting a property. Airbnb is launching the tools in the US and Canada, it said. The tools use an algorithm that flags "potentially high-risk reservations" by looking at user characteristics like "history of positive reviews (or lack of positive reviews), length of time the guest has been on Airbnb, length of the trip, distance to the listing, weekend vs. weekday, among many others." "This anti-party technology is designed to prevent a reservation attempt from going through," Airbnb said. "Guests who are unable to make entire home bookings due to this system will still be able to book a private room (where the Host is more likely to be physically on site) or a hotel room through Airbnb." Airbnb has earned scorn and even lawsuits due to hosting sites with a … [Read more...] about Airbnb’s party-pooper tech claims to stop likely party-throwers from renting

As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to ramp up efforts to halt the spread of poliovirus in New York, anti-vaccine activists are celebrating dips in childhood vaccination rates, calling them a "COVID silver lining." On Tuesday, the CDC published new details on the case of paralytic polio in New York's Rockland county that was first announced in mid-July. The case, which occurred in an unvaccinated, immune-competent young adult male, began in June. Among the report's revelations is that the infection left the man with ongoing flaccid weakness in both legs. As of August 10, officials had tested 260 wastewater samples in Rockland and nearby Orange county. Twenty-one of those 260 samples—8 percent—tested positive, with positive detections spanning samples collected in April, May, June, and July, the report notes. Separately, New York officials announced last Friday, August 12, that sewage samples in New York City had also tested positive . In efforts to expand its crackdown on unauthorized parties, Airbnb is rolling out new "anti-party" tech on the app, the company announced on Tuesday. After making its global party ban permanent in June, Airbnb shared that new software tools have been launched in the US and Canada. The updated tech aims to identify potential rule-breaking guests by examining review history, length of stay, distance to to a host's property and other indicators. In a blog post , Airbnb outlined its goal to "reduce the ability of bad actors to throw unauthorized parties which negatively impact our Hosts, neighbors, and the communities we serve." According to the company, the new system will prevent high-risk reservations for entire homes from being processed. Those guests may still be able to book private rooms in a shared space or other property where a host may be present. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky announced a ban on house parties back in 2019 after several people were shot and killed at a a … [Read more...] about Airbnb Launches New Tools to Curb Partying
When you buy a laptop , you’ll likely have the choice between various screen resolutions, with 4K UHD being one of them. It’s tempting to pick the highest-resolution screen option and call it a day, but is it worth it? The “Retina” Resolution Problem The term “ Retina ” was coined by Apple to describe displays that have a pixel density that makes individual pixels invisible at normal viewing distances. In other words, increasing pixel densities beyond the “retina” level increases perceived image detail because your eyes can’t resolve those additional pixels. Every display becomes “Retina” as your distance from it increases, but typically the ergonomic advice for computer displays is to have them no closer than 20 inches from your eyes. We used a 13.3-inch, 15.6-inch, and 17.3-inch laptop in natural positions, and in each case, the distance was in excess of 20 inches, so this isn’t an unreasonable distance for comfortable use. The problem is that even a large … [Read more...] about Is 4K Really Worth It In a Laptop?

The Chinese state-run Global Times newspaper applauded its bosses on Tuesday for playing “an increasing important role” in helping the Taliban cement its stranglehold on Afghanistan through business ventures, particularly in pursuit of the country’s vast mineral wealth. The Taliban, a Sunni terrorist organization, seized control of the country a year ago on Monday as a result of leftist American President Joe Biden extending the 20-year Afghan war beyond the previous deadline of May 1, 2021. The group, which had previously agreed to negotiations with the U.S.-backed Afghan government, responded to Biden extending the war into September, and then walking back the deadline to August, by launching tens of thousands of attacks on the government and ultimately making it into Kabul. Then-President Ashraf Ghani, who insists he remains president of Afghanistan to this day, immediately fled the country upon the Taliban’s arrival in the capital. Taliban jihadists have struggled to … [Read more...] about China Boasts ‘Increasing Important Role’ in Propping up the Taliban
The Italian Interior Ministry has released figures on illegal immigration that show that arrivals are up more than 40 per cent so far this year. A total of 45,664 migrants landed in Italy illegally from January 1st to August 15th of this year, a number that is a 40.36 per cent increase over the same period last year, according to the interior Ministry statistics. The majority of the landings were autonomous, meaning that the migrants arrive on their own by boat, which accounted for 24,317 migrants, or 53.2 per cent of the total number who have come to Italy so far this year, Il Giornale reported . Just over 46 per cent of the migrants arrived after being rescued in Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, with 7,270 migrants being brought to Italy by migrant taxi NGOs that primarily operate in SAR areas off the North African coast. The 2021 House impeachment vote of former President Donald Trump was one of the most career-wrecking votes in congressional history, as 80 percent of the pro-impeachment members will exit Congress in 2023. With Rep. Cheney’s (R-WY) massive loss Tuesday evening in Wyoming, a mere two of the ten pro-impeachment Republicans remain in the House. Only Reps. David Valadao (R-CA) and Dan Newhouse (R-WA) remain. Newhouse hails from a safer red district, while Valadao is running for reelection in a more contested district, where Trump did not endorse anyone in the primary. Four pro-impeachment Republicans opted to retire and not compete in a GOP primary, which includes Reps. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH), Fred Upton (R-MI), and John Katko (R-NY). Another four pro-impeachment members lost their GOP primary: Reps. Peter Meijer (R-MI), Tom Rice (R-SC), Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA), and Cheney. With all pro-impeachment House primaries completed, attention will now turn to … [Read more...] about 80 Percent of Pro-Impeachment House Republicans to Exit Congress
The Google/China story has enough legs to qualify as a "centipede" at this point. After saying that it would no longer censor Chinese search results and that it was ready to pull out of China, Google also admitted to being the victim of a sophisticated cyberattack that went after more than 30 companies. The immediate aftermath of the announcement was a media feeding frenzy—and that was before the Chinese government's various departments even began reacting to the news. Now that they have, it's clear that Google and China are on a collision course, and that the US government is ready to get involved on Google's side. If you've had difficulty keeping up with the story, have no fear: here's a roundup of the news you need to know. Twists, turns, and U-turns An inside job? It's little more than an anonymously sourced rumor at this point, but Reuters says that insiders from Google's own Chinese office may have been involved in the cyberattack on the company. Chinese sources … [Read more...] about Google v. China: the Chinese government reacts
