While its easy to play the role of the purist and complain about any Porsche that’s not a 911, the Cayenne has done quite a lot for the fans being that its the company’s best selling car and gives R&D more money to improve upon the 911 program. That said, Porsche’s got a new Cayenne and leaner, more efficient, and a hell of a lot better looking. The two major highlights of the new Cayenne lineup are S Hybrid and Turbo models. The least mpg-friendly of the two will have a 4.8 liter biturbo 500 hp V8 whereas the S Hybrid while still powerful, utilizes a 3 liter supercharged V6 electric hybrid engine delivering a total of 333 horsepower and an impressive 34.4 mpg. Porsche says its most athletic SUV lapped the North Loop of the famous Nürburgring in 7:59.74 minutes, claiming a new record for sport utility vehicles. The new Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, which just debuted at the Detroit Auto Show, is the most powerful and top model in the Cayenne lineup, with output of 570 horsepower and 590 pound-feet torque from its twin-turbocharged 4.8-liter V8.Output is 20 hp greater than that of the previous model. Porsche achieves the advantage by incorporating turbochargers into the exhaust manifolds for quicker response and better combustion. The result is a .4-second advantage in 0 to 60 mph time – now a blistering 3.8 seconds – and a top speed of 176 mph. It’s not only a powerful engine that helps the Cayenne Turbo S to achieve its record on the ‘Ring; a sophisticated suspension and powerful brakes contribute, too. Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) minimizes body roll, and torque vectoring selectively applies braking to … [Read more...] about New Porsche Cayenne Turbo S laps ‘Ring in under eight minutes: Detroit Auto Show
The Levante, Maserati’s first-ever SUV, will launch in the fall with a pair of turbocharged V6 engines under the hood, but the Fiat-owned company is looking into introducing a range-topping model powered by a V8 engine. The twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 mill that powers the range-topping Quattroporte fits neatly in the Levante’s engine bay, according to Maserati. It delivers 523 horsepower and 524 pound-feet of torque, and it spins the big sedan’s rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission controlled by shift paddles. The Levante V8 would ditch rear-wheel drive in favor of a more winter-friendly all-wheel drive system. The V8-powered Levante isn’t merely a vague idea that gets discussed during the company’s board meetings. Maserati told Autoblog that its engineers have already started testing a V8 prototype, though the company warns that the model hasn’t been approved for production yet. Davide Danesin, the head of Maserati vehicle … [Read more...] about Could a V8-powered Maserati Levante topple the Porsche Cayenne Turbo?
If you thought the 510-horsepower supercharged V8 Range Rover Sport was as, uhhh, sporty as a Land Rover could get, you’d be wrong.Land Rover will unveil a high-performance version of the Sport at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed. It’s called the SVR, and it promises to be one of the most awesome displays of British power since the fall of the Empire. The SVR will be built by Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations, which will handle all of the company’s limited-production models from now on, and is set to go up against the likes of the BMW X5 M, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, and Porsche Cayenne. To do that, it will use the 550-hp supercharged 5.0-liter V8 previously seen in various JLR performance models, including the 2015 Jaguar F-Type R and the F-Type-based Project 7, which will also debut in production form at Goodwood. An eight-speed automatic transmission will likely accompany the V8, along with upgraded suspension and brakes to make the SVR handle like something other … [Read more...] about Land Rover’s Range Rover Sport SVR is gunning for the Porsche Cayenne
The Eterniti Artemis is not the only super-SUV based on the Porsche Cayenne. German tuner Hofele Design is offering power-hungry soccer moms its own outrageous performance sport-ute, but with a green twist. Instead of a massive V8, the Cayster GT 670 sports diesel and hybrid powertrains. The Cayster GT 670 is based on the two most eco-friendly Cayenne models: the S Hybrid and Diesel. The S Hybrid starts with 360 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque; Hofele’s tweaks bump those numbers to 481 hp and 544 lb-ft. The stock Cayenne Diesel has 240 hp and 406 lb-ft, while the Cayster has 300 hp and 479 lb-ft.That extra power should equate to extra performance. Hofele did not divulge any performance data, but expect the Cayster GT 670 yo clock a faster 0-60 time than the Cayenne S Hybrid’s 6.1 seconds or the Diesel’s 7.2 seconds. However, the Cayster may have trouble keeping up with the Artemis, which has a 4.8-liter V8 producing over 600 horsepower.Boosting the performance … [Read more...] about Cayster GT 670: German tuner soups up Cayenne Hybrid and Diesel
BMW is busily developing an all-new 5 Series, and a report coming out of Germany gives us a better idea of what to expect when it arrives in 2016.Called G30 internally, the next 5 Series will weigh at least 220 pounds less than the current model pictured above, thanks to the use of lightweight materials like aluminum and, to a lesser extent, carbon fiber. Building the next 5 with lightweight components will noticeably improve efficiency, a move that will help the sedan comply with the strict emissions regulations set to come into effect across Europe and in the United States over the coming years. To further cater to efficiency-minded buyers, BMW will introduce a plug-in hybrid variant of the next 5 early in the production run. Sources close to the Munich-based automaker have revealed the drivetrain will consist of a compact 109-horsepower electric motor linked to a lithium-ion battery pack that will work in conjunction with 2.0-liter four-cylinder … [Read more...] about Next BMW 5 Series lineup to include plug-in hybrid, 626-hp AWD M5?
Maserati’s first SUV is an impressive initial stab at the performance SUV segment, but even its hottest variant, packing 424 horsepower, is no match for rivals like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and upcoming Land Rover Range Rover Velar SVR. To that end, Autocar is reporting that the Italian luxury brand is working on a range-topping Levante GTS.While the standard Levante and Levante S use turbocharged V6 engines, the GTS is set to use a Ferrari-built V8 (shared with the Quattroporte GTS). The twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter mill will churn up 530hp and 523 pound-feet of torque – figures that closely resemble the 520-hp Cayenne Turbo, but fall short of the Turbo S’s 570-hp boast. The Levante won’t just pack a big engine, either. Maserati will tune the SUV’s suspension, chassis, and steering for increased stiffness and responsiveness. We can also expect a brake upgrade to counteract the potential bump in momentum. Like other Maserati models (especially those with V8 … [Read more...] about Everything is better with a Ferrari-built V8, including Maserati’s Levante SUV
Cruise control is the perfect way to neuter a good sports car. It doesn’t really matter whether you’re driving a Porsche 911 GTS or a Volkswagen Passat when you’re one-hand-steering your way down I-80 at a steady five-over, with your right leg resting lazily in the footwell. That was the case until now. Porsche developed its InnoDrive system to deliver stress-free cruising without muting a car’s performance genes.Data-drivenPorsche InnoDrive is the carmaker’s next-generation cruise control. It knows almost as much about the car, its capabilities, and its surroundings as the driver, but it learns in a different way.The software relies partly on data sent by the car’s various sensors – like the ones installed to monitor the steering angle – to calculate the ideal driving strategy for a particular route. It can tell when the road is wet (or when it’s snowing) by analyzing how Porsche’s Stability Management (PSM) technology … [Read more...] about Porsche InnoDrive is a cruise control system that doesn’t neuter a sports car
SUVs certainly won’t win any fuel efficiency contests even with the latest hybrid technology, but they’re still hard to beat in terms of towing capacity and off-road prowess.
