Justin Rogers The Detroit News Published 9:25 PM EDT Apr 25, 2019 Allen Park — For the second time in five years, the Detroit Lions drafted a tight end in the top 10 of the NFL, selecting Iowa's T.J. Hockenson with the No. 8 pick. The John Mackey award winner as the nation's best tight end in 2018, Hockenson showcased a well-rounded skill set, proving to be an excellent blocker while catching 49 ball for 760 yards and five touchdowns for the Hawkeyes. Notably, he dropped just one pass, according to Pro Football Focus. Hockenson becomes the fourth tight end selected in top-10 since 1997. Detroit was the last team to grab one in that range, taking Eric Ebron with the No. 10 choice in 2014. The Lions cut Ebron last offseason and got little production from the position in 2018. The group combined for 45 catches, 461 yards and four touchdowns. The team partially addressed the need in free agency, signing Jesse James and Logan Thomas … [Read more...] about Lions select T.J. Matt Charboneau The Detroit News Published 3:08 PM EDT Apr 25, 2019 Holding the No. 8 pick in the NFL Draft leaves a team plenty of options, and that’s the position the Detroit Lions find themselves in as the annual draft begins on Thursday night from Nashville. The Lions are slotted to pick eighth overall, but with plenty of teams looking to move up, there’s a chance another team moves into that slot if they present a decent offer to the Lions. However, if general manager Bob Quinn ends up making Detroit’s first-round pick from the No. 8 spot, here’s a look at how that position has played out in the last 10 years. 2018 Roquan Smith, LB, Chicago: The Bears landed a good one when they picked up the 6-foot-1 Smith out of Georgia. He had 122 tackles as a rookie and was an alternate in the Pro Bowl despite missing most of training camp as a holdout and starting slowly when the season began. However, he got better as the season progressed and had 82 tackles … [Read more...] about Last 10 No. 8 picks in NFL Draft prove to be productive group
The Detroit News Published 6:16 AM EDT Apr 20, 2019 Michigan cornerback David Long and Eastern Michigan edge rusher Maxx Crosby are among the top 10 “sleeper” NFL Draft prospects identified by Pro Football Focus’ Mike Renner, via ESPN (pay site). “In 595 coverage snaps in his three seasons at Michigan, he was targeted 60 times and allowed all of 18 receptions – the vast majority of which were throws underneath – for 130 yards and a passer rating of 24.3,” Renner says of Long. “On targets 10-plus yards downfield, Long yielded only four completions on 29 attempts for 59 yards while breaking up 13. Those stats are out of this world.” Long, 5-11 and 196 pounds, declared for the NFL Draft with one season of eligibility remaining at Michigan. He finished his UM career with three interceptions and 17 pass break-ups in 29 games. The All-Big Ten first team player ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine and is projected to be … [Read more...] about Michigan’s David Long, EMU’s Maxx Crosby among top ‘sleeper’ picks in NFL Draft
Justin Rogers The Detroit News Published 12:19 PM EDT Apr 9, 2019 Allen Park — The longer we talk about the NFL draft, the more circular the analysis seems to become. So it's not surprising, with the draft two weeks away, we're coming back to the idea of the Detroit Lions taking a tight end with the No. 8 pick. In his latest mock draft for ESPN, analyst Todd McShay projects ideal, three-round scenarios for each of the league's 32 franchises. In it, he has the Lions taking Iowa's T.J. Hockenson at No. 8, followed by Louisiana Tech defensive end Jaylon Ferguson in the second round and Iowa State wide receiver Hakeem Butler in the third. Like many outside observers, McShay acknowledges Detroit's need for another pass rusher. But despite the premium placed on the position, he feels the team can get better value going with Hockenson early, over Michigan's Rashan Gary, Mississippi State's Montez Sweat and Houston interior lineman Ed Oliver. "Sometimes you … [Read more...] about ESPN’s Todd McShay explains why the Detroit Lions should pick T.J. Hockenson over DE at No. 8 pick in NFL draft.
