Many business leaders know their company’s future is intertwined with the successful adoption of AI, but struggle with how to operationalize the technology at scale. Transitioning from experimentation into business-impacting models deployed in production can be a real challenge. NetApp and NVIDIA are making it simple for enterprises to deploy AI fast, with new ONTAP AI integrated solutions that come in pre-configured sizes and are pre-tested and optimized for the scale of AI resources a business might need. It’s the simplified model of converged infrastructure now applied to AI. More so than talent or even budget, the top inhibitor to deploying AI scale is often concerns around platforms. For those in this infrastructure dilemma, common challenges include: The complexity of designing AI infrastructure , including optimizing the balance of compute, storage and networking in support of the unique demands of data analytics, model training and production model-serving. … [Read more...] about How NVIDIA and NetApp Simplify and Speed AI Deployments for Businesses

Report: PS5 storage expansion will be available by summer
Bloomberg cites unnamed "people briefed on the matter" in reporting that PS5 owners will finally be able to expand the system's built-in storage by this coming summer. The planned firmware update that will unlock this feature will also allow for higher cooling-fan speeds on the system to prevent overheating, Bloomberg reports. For games designed for the PS5, owners are currently limited to 667GB of usable space on the system's 825GB high-speed NVMe drive. That's a pretty strict limit when individual PS5 games can be 50 to 100GB or more at the high end. PS5 owners can plug in a standard USB hard drive to store backward compatible PlayStation 4 games running on the system, though. Further Reading Sony details PS5’s fast SSD, variable clock rates, 3D audio tech [Updated] Almost a year ago, Sony announced that the PS5's storage space would be expandable with certain standard M.2 solid state drives , which are shaped a bit like a stick of gum. Sony said it would be … [Read more...] about Report: PS5 storage expansion will be available by summer
Rocket Report: Cornwall says “LOL, no” to space tourism, Korean rocket on track
Welcome to Edition 3.34 of the Rocket Report! I apologize for the unplanned hiatus last week. The Rocket Report's Houston-based author lacked power until Wednesday night amidst a massive winter storm and had no reliable Internet until Friday afternoon. We still had no hot water at our house, but at least we're no longer freezing. We're back just in time to spew all manner of spicy launch news this week. As always, Ars welcomes reader submissions , and if you don't want to miss an issue, please subscribe using the box below (the form will not appear on AMP-enabled versions of the site). Each report will include information on small-, medium-, and heavy-lift rockets as well as a quick look ahead at the next three launches on the calendar. KSLV-2 rocket on track for 2022 launch . As part of its budget for 2021 space activities, South Korea will spend $553 million for satellites, rockets, and other equipment. SpaceNews reports this funding will keep the country's development of … [Read more...] about Rocket Report: Cornwall says “LOL, no” to space tourism, Korean rocket on track
Bees Recognize People
Common honey bees can be trained to recognize individual people, according to a paper published by Dr. Adrian Dyer in the Journal of Experimental Biology. The training consisted of showing the bees a series of black-and-white pictures of human faces. The bees got tasty or sour rewards, depending on their performance. The face series is exactly the same one used by psychologists to test human memory. How do bees do it? Bee brains are just one-twenty thousandth the size of a human brain. The experiment implies that there is a simpler solution to the problem of face recognition than has been discovered so far by biometric security researchers. I'm getting this mental picture of a swarm of friendly, well-trained honey bees humming through an airport terminal, looking for known terrorists. And they even have a way to incapacitate their prey! On the other hand, since stinging kills the bee, you'd be losing highly trained assets... In his chilling novel The Green Brain , … [Read more...] about Bees Recognize People
How Hubble Snaps Those Amazing Space Images
If you see an incredible image of deep space, chances are it came from Hubble. Launched in 1990, Hubble is a telescope that orbits above Earth's atmosphere, beaming home images that have helped us solve some of the universe's greatest mysteries. Not only does NASA count Hubble as one of its most successful science missions, but it is also among the biggest advancements humans have ever made in space. The Tech That Powers Hubble Hubble orbits around Earth at about five miles per second; a complete spin takes 97 minutes. On its journey, its mirror captures light and directs it into its instruments, which then work together to provide the observation. While Hubble provides views of deep space, it doesn't magnify distant stars, alien planets and galaxies. Instead, it collects more light than the human eye can see on its own. With a telescope, the bigger the mirror, the better the vision. Hubble's mirror is 94.5 inches in diameter, which is smaller than most Earth-based telescopes. … [Read more...] about How Hubble Snaps Those Amazing Space Images
