The Canadian Armed Forces revealed late Thursday that it is monitoring a “potential second incident” related to the discovery of a massive Chinese balloon over Montana that the Communist Party claimed had drifted off course and coincidentally landed near American military sites of high importance. The Pentagon confirmed late Thursday that it had identified what it suspected was a Chinese surveillance balloon over Montana, near an area housing nuclear missile silo fields. A Pentagon spokesman insisted the balloon was “currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground.” Pentagon officials reportedly opted not to shoot the balloon down, despite the overt national security threat it causes, out of concern that debris from the destroyed balloon could hurt people on the ground. The Communist Party of China confirmed on Friday that the balloon originated in China, but claimed it … [Read more...] about Canada Says It Is Monitoring ‘Potential Second Incident’ Linked to Chinese Alleged Spy Balloon

It looks like Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony will skip E3 2023
Audio player loading… 2023 may mark the first year ever where E3 has been without an appearance from Xbox, Sony, or Nintendo. This marks a significant moment in a gradual shift in the games industry that’s been years in the making. The E3 convention in June is often where we hear about all the upcoming games for Xbox Series X |S, Nintendo Switch , and PS5 . Twitter’s next big move could be to introduce an ID verified badge
Audio player loading… Twitter is set to introduce a feature whereby it’ll show a badge to indicate that an account has been ID-verified, at least going by a new leak. Jane Manchun Wong, a software dev and reliable source of spillage on the social media platform in the past, just shared this info in a tweet which we should naturally regard with the usual skeptical stance that all rumors deserve. Twitter is working on showing you whether an account is ID verified pic.twitter.com/t8Qo5uT0B9 February 1, 2023 See more As you can see, the info is displayed alongside the blue check ( which has been the subject of much controversy recently , as you likely haven’t failed to notice). Wong further explains (opens in new tab) the process of getting ID verified: “There’ll be a flow for uploading your legal ID and your selfie for the purpose of confirming your identity.” Analysis: Making Twitter a less toxic place, perhaps? President Boris Johnson? NYC-Born Ex-UK PM Hints at White House Bid
The New York City-born former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson has said that he would not rule out a potential bid for the White House. Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, who served as British Prime Minister from 2019 to 2022 before being forced to resign over a series scandals including being fined for hosting a series of parties in Downing Street which violated the very same draconian lockdown measures his own government imposed upon the public during the Chinese coronavirus crisis, is apparently looking for a second act in his political career. While Westminster watchers have long speculated that such a second act would come in the form of an attempt to recapture his previous position as prime minister, Mr Johsnon threw a spanner in the works this week by telling the Spectator magazine: “I don’t rule it out,” in reference to a potential presidential run. The former British prime minister was born in New York City in 1964 while his father, Stanley … [Read more...] about President Boris Johnson? NYC-Born Ex-UK PM Hints at White House Bid
Final Fantasy 16 won’t be open world, but it will ‘find inspiration’ from them
Audio player loading… Despite the changes made by its predecessor, Final Fantasy 16 won't be bringing us a large open world. We've seen a big marketing push earlier today, in the form of a series of interviews with Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida. Speaking with IGN (opens in new tab) , Yoshida confirmed that the upcoming PS5 exclusive diverges significantly from Final Fantasy 15 . “To bring a story that feels like it spans an entire globe and beyond, we decided to avoid an open world design that limits us to a single open world space, and instead focus on an independent area-based game design that can give players a better feel of a truly 'global' scale," he says. However, Yoshida explains that his sequel will still contain "inspiration" from such games, so anyone who enjoyed 15's approach won't be left behind. "To create a game that might excite and resonate not only with our core fans, but also with that new generation, we played a lot of games … [Read more...] about Final Fantasy 16 won’t be open world, but it will ‘find inspiration’ from them
HBO Max, Paramount Plus join Netflix in frustrating 2023 TV show cancellation spree
Audio player loading… Update: Paramount has responded to TechRadar's request for comment about its Paramount Plus and Showtime merger. In the US, Paramount Plus ' premium tier will be rebranded to "Paramount Plus with Showtime". The merger will take place later this year – Paramount declined to provide an exact date – and will give customers "a more compelling offering" of content. Paramount says the move "is a natural next step" in its revamped strategy to become a singular, multiplatform, IP-driven company. As for UK and Australian audiences, Paramount confirmed no changes will be made to its current Paramount Plus subscription plans. Showtime is already integrated into Paramount Plus (as an extra channel) in non-US territories. It sounds like Google will unveil its ChatGPT clone February 8
Everybody panic! Next week Google is hosting what can only be described as an "emergency" event. According to an invite sent to The Verge , the event will revolve around "using the power of AI to reimagine how people search for, explore and interact with information, making it more natural and intuitive than ever before to find what you need"—in other words, Google's going to fire up its photocopier and stick OpenAI's ChatGPT onto the platen. The 40-minute event will, of course, be live on YouTube on February 8. Google's parent company, Alphabet, had its earnings call yesterday, and Google/Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai promised that “very soon people will be able to interact directly with our newest, most powerful language models as a companion to Search in experimental and innovative ways.” Earlier this year, the company declared a " code red " over the meteoric rise of ChatGPT and even dragged co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin out of retirement to help. Google has … [Read more...] about It sounds like Google will unveil its ChatGPT clone February 8
British reality show rigs teens’ iPhones to record all their activity
A new reality series airing on Channel 4 used rigged iPhones to monitor all the digital activities of its teen characters, wrote the Columbia Journalism Review on Thursday. The system, referred to as a "digital rig" by the studio that developed it, had feeds monitored by a production team 13 hours a day, seven days a week. The Secret Life of Students was a four-part documentary series meant to portray the lives of 12 freshmen as they navigated the first four months of college. In addition to filming the students, the production studio, Raw TV, also thought it would be a good idea to track the students' activity on their phones, including Internet search history, Twitter usage, texts, and phone calls. Further Reading How movies and TV give life to the mundane text message While the entire program, phone use included, seems to have fallen a little flat, it produced some interesting moments. "Is chlamydia permanent?" one subject searched on her phone after … [Read more...] about British reality show rigs teens’ iPhones to record all their activity
TrackingPoint turns to crowdsourcing to pick next Linux-powered rifle
Back in March, Ars spent some time at the shooting range with Austin-based TrackingPoint and its $17,000 Linux-powered rifles . The company sells three different models of bolt-action hunting rifles equipped with big, computerized tracking scopes that use lasers and predictive algorithms to reliably land rounds on moving targets as far away as 1,000 yards with relative ease. TrackingPoint's offerings are moving very briskly; almost the entire production run for this year has been presold. Its initial offerings are limited to long-range bolt-action hunting rifles; the weapons' size and mass (and cost!) make them impractical to use for pretty much anything other than long-distance hunting. However, the huge popularity of the "precision guided firearm" means that TrackingPoint's next application of the technology could go in any number of directions. The military, the FBI, and many police department SWAT teams have shown interest in TrackingPoint's weapon systems, and the technology … [Read more...] about TrackingPoint turns to crowdsourcing to pick next Linux-powered rifle
