Weber is expanding its line of internet-connected grills to encompass its popular gas models , including the company’s entry-level Spirt lineup, offering Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity for tracking temperature and an integrated digital display. Connected grilling isn’t a new concept for Weber: the company has offered a line of iGrill meat thermometers for years as add-ons for its existing grills, and last year, it debuted its second-generation Weber Connect smart grilling hub accessory , which offers a newer and more advanced Weber Connect app. It has also offered Weber Connect smart grilling features on its SmokeFire pellet smoker (in a similar manner to Trager’s WiFIRE smokers). Including smart technology to control things like temperature or monitor doneness makes a bit more sense for a pellet smoker, though — which, by the very nature of its cooking technique, demands longer cook times at lower temperatures. The ability to keep an eye on how a brisket is doing or … [Read more...] about Weber’s latest gas grills have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and digital displays

HP to Acquire Palm for $1.2 Billion
Ending weeks of speculation about its future, Palm has been acquired by Hewlett-Packard for $1.2 billion, the companies announced this afternoon. The survival of webOS and its parent company had come under question in recent weeks, with some analysts suggesting that shares of Palm were essentially worthless . Things only got worse when RadioShack decided to stop selling Palm's two flagship devices: Pre and Pixi. Now it appears that Palm and its mobile operating system have lived to fight another day, with CEO Jon Rubinstein saying in a statement that "HP’s longstanding culture of innovation, scale and global operating resources make it the perfect partner to rapidly accelerate the growth of webOS." Tech executives face round two of Congressional grilling over SolarWinds breach
Cybersecurity executives are due to face their second round of Congressional questions on Friday over their companies' roles in the sprawling series of digital intrusions blamed on the Russian government. Their appearance comes three days after the trio testified before U.S. senators over the massive breach, which has ensnared nine American government agencies and more than 100 other organizations. SolarWinds' former chief executive - Kevin Thompson, who stepped down shortly before the breach was announced - was also due to testify. Hackers allegedly working for Moscow surreptitiously subverted SolarWinds' software to infiltrate their targets, spending months inside government networks before they were identified. … [Read more...] about Tech executives face round two of Congressional grilling over SolarWinds breach
The 2008 moment when triumph turned to torment for SpaceX
This is an excerpt from chapter eight of the book LIFTOFF: Elon Musk and the Desperate Early Days That Launched SpaceX by our own Eric Berger. The book will be published on March 2, 2021. In this excerpt, it is the summer of 2008, and SpaceX has attempted to launch the Falcon 1 rocket twice already, failing both times. As the company's engineers prepare for a third launch attempt from tiny Omelek Island in the Kwajalein Atoll, time and money are running out... By the time of Flight Three, the SpaceXers had grown accustomed to their visits out to the central Pacific Kwajalein Atoll for launches. Over the course of three years, they learned how to survive in the tropical environment and even enjoy island life. Some of these lessons were hard won, however. Fairly early on during the Kwaj experience, engineer Brian Bjelde missed the evening boat back to Kwajalein. It happened. He and a few others slept under the stars, passing a perfectly pleasant night. But the next morning, … [Read more...] about The 2008 moment when triumph turned to torment for SpaceX
