Update: The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which honors more than 4,000 men, women and children who were lynched in America, opens to the public today. Below, our story on why 60 Minutes decided to air graphic photos of lynchings in its report about the memorial: Wes Johnson was about 18 years old when he was murdered in a cotton field in southern Alabama. It was 1937, and according to newspaper reports at the time, a mob of men had dragged him from his jail cell before he could stand trial for the charge against him: assaulting a white woman. Today, only one photograph is known to exist of Johnson, a single picture to preserve his image for posterity—his lifeless body hanging from a tree. Bryan Stevenson wants to honor the legacy of Johnson, and thousands like him, with a new memorial for victims of lynching in America. Stevenson is a lawyer and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, a non-profit organization that investigates the lynchings of African Americans. O, what a surprise! Oprah Winfrey drops in on AT&T employees in Dallas
Oprah — yes, that Oprah — was at AT&T headquarters downtown today. On Twitter, several employees have posted about the surprise visit from the talk show queen. Oprah is in D-FW for a speech tonight at the 10th Annual Gala of Minnie's Food Pantry in Collin County. But she stopped by AT&T offices first, which was apparently a surprise to employees, some of whom got up close and personal with the megastar. No word from AT&T yet on why Oprah dropped in.The telecom isn't usually a draw for such star power, but that could be changing as AT&T is in the middle of a battle to buy Time Warner, an entertainment giant which owns networks like HBO, TNT and others. Maybe Oprah was there to talk about future projects? But any new project would be in limbo until the deal gets approval by the Justice Department, which has sued to block the merger, saying that it harms competition. Her report will be broadcast on 60 Minutes, Sunday, April 8 at 7:00 p.m., ET/PT on CBS. Each marker represents a state county and contains the names of victims of documented lynchings from that area. The memorial takes up six acres in the heart of Montgomery, Alabama, perhaps the best known city in the struggle for civil rights. Alabama was also the scene of 361 documented lynchings. The efforts to build "The National Memorial for Peace and Justice" were led by Bryan Stevenson, a lawyer who founded the Equal Justice Initiative. Asked by Winfrey why he chose to commemorate lynching as opposed to other … [Read more...] about Oprah Winfrey gets first look inside memorial to the victims of lynchings
