China's video games regulator granted publishing licences to 45 foreign games for release in the country further lifting rigid curbs that have hammered the industry for 18 months. Among the imported online games approved by the National Press and Publication Administration are five to be published by Tencent Holdings such as "Pokemon Unite" by Nintendo and "Valorant" by Riot Games , according to a list the regulator released. End of an era: Microsoft will soon stop selling Windows 10 licences
Audio player loading… Microsoft has announced that it will officially cease sales of Windows 10 licenses through its website on January 31 , marking an end of sorts to the reign of the world’s current most popular operating system. The OS (which comes in Home and Pro variants) has been around since late 2014, with a full public release in July 2015. After the faltering mishaps that were Windows Vista, 7, and 8, Windows 10 was a breath of fresh air – a return, many felt, to the glory days of Windows XP and its straightforward, effective interface. Although the new kid on the block Windows 11 arrived towards the end of 2021, making it now more than a year old, adoption hasn’t exactly been swift ; as of December last year, the market share held by Windows 10 was still more than four times that of its successor. If you want to buy a copy of Windows 10 Home or Pro directly from Microsoft (opens in new tab) , then, you’ll need to do so before the … [Read more...] about End of an era: Microsoft will soon stop selling Windows 10 licences
Data breach may have leaked classified law enforcement operations information to criminals
Why it matters: A company that provides tech solutions to law enforcement agencies has reportedly suffered a breach that might jeopardize ongoing police operations and undercover personnel. It is unclear if criminals currently under investigation have accessed the information, but the fact that cybercriminals have it and could potentially sell it is disturbing. On January 11, Wired reported that a company called ODIN Intelligence (OI) was involved in a data leak that might have revealed the addresses and names of thousands of criminal suspects. It also exposed the phone numbers, email addresses, and identities of hundreds of officers involved in around 200 law enforcement operations, including investigations, stings, and undercover police work. It was unclear who was behind the data breach, and OI would not confirm or deny that its systems were attacked. "ODIN Intelligence Inc. takes security very seriously," CEO Erik McCauley said in a boilerplate statement. "We have and are … [Read more...] about Data breach may have leaked classified law enforcement operations information to criminals

The best thing to come out of Google Stadia will live on after the service dies
Audio player loading… While gaming service Stadia shuts down on January 18, Google has announced plans to keep its controller alive. It may not seem like much in light of a whole catalog of cloud streaming games becoming inaccessible, but the controller really was the quiet highlight of Google’s first major step into gaming. While it’s not revealed the full details yet, Google said on Twitter that it will “be releasing a self-serve tool to enable Bluetooth connections on your Stadia Controller .” Google has promised to share the specifics in time for the shutdown. Currently, the Stadia gamepad can only connect to Google’s platform. Until these recently announced plans, when the service shuts down on January 18, the controller would have become a useless hunk of plastic, nickel, and silicon destined for landfill. Now it appears you will be able to use the controller with other Bluetooth-enabled devices – PC and Android, most likely; maybe Apple devices and even the PS5 , … [Read more...] about The best thing to come out of Google Stadia will live on after the service dies
