Optus Business has announced a partnership with Curtin University that will see the pair work together on artificial intelligence (AI). special feature AI, Automation, and Tech Jobs There are some things that machines are simply better at doing than humans, but humans still have plenty going for them. Here's a look at how the two are going to work in concert to deliver a more powerful future for IT, and the human race. Read More A new research group that will operate out of the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences has been stood up under the partnership, which will focus on the impact of AI on regional telecommunications, higher education, and the urban environment. The five-year arrangement will also see the appointment of an Optus chair in artificial intelligence and three Optus Research Fellows, as well as funding for PhD scholarships and student projects, Optus explained on Monday. A platform that can diagnose several diseases with a high degree of precision using metabolic markers found in patients' blood has been developed by scientists at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil. The method combines mass spectrometry, which can identify tens of thousands of molecules present in blood serum, with an artificial intelligence algorithm capable of finding patterns associated with diseases of viral, bacterial, fungal and even genetic origin. The research was supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation - FAPESP and conducted as part of Carlos Fernando Odir Rodrigues Melo's PhD. The results have been published in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology. "We used infection by Zika virus as a model to develop the platform and showed that in this case, diagnostic accuracy exceeded 95%. One of the main advantages is that the method doesn't lose sensitivity even if the virus mutates," said Melo's supervisor Rodrigo Ramos Catharino, principal … [Read more...] about Platform Uses Artificial Intelligence to Diagnose Zika and Other Pathogens
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2018--(NASDAQ: AMZN) – Amazon today announced the winners of the Amazon Research Awards (ARA) in 2017, a program designed to support independent external research in areas relevant for Amazon customers. The funded research is in the fields of computer science and related topics including machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and natural language processing. In the third year of ARA, more than 800 research groups, universities and scientific institutions from North America and Europe took part in the open call for proposals in fall 2017. Out of all these applicants, 49 projects will be supported with the Amazon Research Awards with up to $80,000 per project.“With the Amazon Research Awards, we aim to deepen the existing ties of Amazon Research teams across the world to research institutions and to fund research themes that will define the future of artificial intelligence,” said Ralf Herbrich, Director of Machine Learning at … [Read more...] about Amazon Research Awards Honor Outstanding Academic Projects in Artificial Intelligence
Carnegie Mellon, a university renowned for its robotics and computer science program, now offers college students a degree in artificial intelligence.AI, boosted by new machine learning and neural network technology, is racing across the computing industry. Its chief virtue is an ability to learn patterns from real-world data -- a lot of photos labeled "cat," for example, instead of some attempt to describe in programming terms that a cat has two round eyes, whiskers, and pointy ears. AI is endowing computers, phones, and online services with a new level of sophistication and human-friendly abilities."Specialists in artificial intelligence have never been more important, in shorter supply or in greater demand by employers," said Andrew Moore, dean of the university's School of Computer Science, in a statement Thursday. Some big uses of AI are recognizing images in photos or videos, understanding human speech, and giving voice to text in realistically human tones. For an illustration of … [Read more...] about Naturally intelligent kids now can get a degree in artificial intelligence at Carnegie Mellon
Carnegie Mellon University today announced it will offer an undergraduate degree in artificial intelligence. The college claims the degree will be the first of its kind in the United States. The first courses for the Bachelor of Science degree will be offered this fall. Based in Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University is a storied institution in AI circles, a central figure in the development of autonomous vehicles today and historically led by figures like Herbert Simon and Alan Newell, creators of some of the earliest forms of AI. A study by U.S. News and World Report released in March declared Carnegie Mellon the best computer science college in the U.S. for artificial intelligence, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, and the University of California, Berkeley. Carnegie Mellon currently offers 12 AI-related courses, said Professor Reid Simmons, who will run the new program, and others will be added as the degree program grows. While popular … [Read more...] about Carnegie Mellon University starts first AI degree program in U.S.
