It's not a surprise that EA hasn't managed its exclusive rights to the Star Wars franchise well this generation. While the original Xbox and Xbox 360 saw a tremendous amount of Star Wars content, EA has only managed to release the mediocre Star Wars Battlefront games which haven't been well-received by critics or gamers. Star Wars Battlefront II featured egregious pay-to-win microtransactions which caused various governments to crack down on the practice. However, that's not all. Recently, a troubling report emerged which said that EA wasn't allowing BioWare to make any more Knights of the Old Republic games. According to multiple reports by Den of Geek and other outlets, BioWare has repeatedly asked EA for permission to make a new Knights of the Old Republic game, but the executives at the parent company keep on denying that request. As with any such rumor, treat it with a grain of salt, but from what we've seen in recent months, there may be some truth to this. Many months ago, … [Read more...] about EA supposedly won’t let BioWare make more Knights of the Old Republic games
What's this? A licensed Star Wars game on Android that people actually want? Believe it or not, the fan-favorite Knights of the Old Republic just crash-landed into the Play Store out of nowhere. You can grab it for your Android 4.1+ device for five bucks right now. That's a 50% discounted price, at least according to the app description. Compatibility seems a little spotty, too: it's downloadable with most of my Nexus and SHIELD devices, but not my G Pad 8.3 GPE tablet. The ADT-1 is compatible, but not the Nexus Player. If you're wondering what the fuss is about, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (or KOTOR, as it's affectionately known) was a smash hit on consoles and PCs back in 2003. It combines the rich universe of Star Wars and the RPG chops of developer Bioware to tell a story that pre-dates even the prequel movies by thousands of years. You control a customizable character as he or she becomes a Jedi and joins a galactic battle against the menacing Sith. What just happened? Fans of Bioware's classic Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic RPG may have heard of Apeiron, an ambitious fan game that sought to recreate KOTOR with modern visuals and gameplay mechanics: Apeiron. Despite years of development, Apeiron will never see the light of day - Lucasfilm has issued a cease and desist letter to Poem Studios, the team behind the project, prompting them to shut it down. Game publishers have a history of shutting down promising fan projects - it's a trend that's been going on for the better part of the last decade (if not longer). As unfortunate as it is, it's hard to fault them for it. Allowing fan games that reboot or otherwise recreate older titles can set a dangerous precedent for companies. Unfortunately, some companies are certainly more zealous about the policing of their intellectual properties than others. One such company is Lucasfilm. The entertainment giant shut down a fan-created spiritual successor to the original Star Wars: … [Read more...] about Lucasfilm shuts down ambitious Knights of the Old Republic fan remake Apeiron
