VPN downloads soar in Cuba following internet disruptions

July 18, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… VPN and privacy software users have surged in Cuba as authorities disrupt internet access to crack down on protesters. There have been over 34,000 more downloads of the free VPN-like service Psiphon compared to the two weeks before the incident, independent media organization Inventario reported. About 89,000 Cubans installed the software on their device to be able to bypass restrictions. On the early morning of July 15, a wave of internet disruptions spread across the country as a way to silence protesters. Starting off in Pinar Del Río and then spreading up to the capital Havana, Cubans took to the streets to speak out against months of food, medicine, fuel and electricity shortages crippling the island. Internet shutdowns are an increasing issue worldwide, with authoritarian governments using them to restrict communications - especially during protests or elections. This is why people have learnt to turn on one of the best VPN … [Read more...] about VPN downloads soar in Cuba following internet disruptions

It has a strong reputation for privacy and also is at the forefront of efforts to fight internet censorship. I took it for a spin to see how it performs. When compared to the best VPNs , VyprVPN performs well but not without some small issues. Thanks to its censorship-busting Chameleon protocol, it’s a great pick for people trying to use the internet from China or similarly restrictive regimes. However, it falls short in some other areas, most notably its inability to unblock Netflix . Here's … [Read more...] about VyprVPN Review: Venomous or Defanged?

India Declares War on BBC Narendra Modi Documentary

January 25, 2023 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

The government of India is extremely unhappy with a BBC documentary critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi – so unhappy that the government cut power to a university attempting to screen the film and ordered social media giants Twitter and YouTube to block attempts to share it. Both Twitter and YouTube complied with these censorship requests. The documentary is called India: The Modi Question . The BBC felt Modi deserved careful scrutiny because India is “seen by the west as an important bulwark against Chinese domination of Asia.” The first installment of the planned two-part series covered Modi’s rise in Indian politics, including his ties to various Hindu nationalist organizations, and his controversial tenure as chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat. Gujarat was the scene of violence between Muslims and Hindus in the early 2000s, culminating in the murder of 60 Hindu pilgrims when their train was set on fire. The majority Hindus … [Read more...] about India Declares War on BBC Narendra Modi Documentary

Sanctions Fail: UK Buying Up More ‘Indian’ Oil Made from Russian Crude

January 15, 2023 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Britain is increasing purchases of Indian oil amid the Western sanctions war with Russia – but much of it is likely refined from Russian product sold to India at a discount. While there is a general perception that Russia has become a pariah state since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with only the likes of Iran and North Korea allegedly offering covert support, many governments in Africa, Asia, and South America have largely stayed out of the West’s economic war with Moscow, including countries considered traditional allies such as Israel , India , and even NATO member Turkey . Indeed, India took advantage of the slowdown in the energy trade, in particular, between Russia and the European Union early on in the conflict to ink a deal to purchase Russian oil at a significant discount — and Britain, one of the key cheerleaders for sanctions on Russia, has found itself stepping up purchases of that oil after it has been processed at Indian refineries, … [Read more...] about Sanctions Fail: UK Buying Up More ‘Indian’ Oil Made from Russian Crude

Hundreds Attend Funeral of Zambian Killed Fighting for Russia in Ukraine

January 25, 2023 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Hundreds of people turned out in Lusaka, Zambia, on Tuesday to attend the funeral of Lemekani Nyirenda, a 23-year-old engineering student recruited by Russia’s infamous Wagner Group of mercenaries and killed while fighting for Russia in Ukraine. Nyirenda traveled to Russia to attend the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, with an enrollment sponsored by the Zambian government. In 2020, he was arrested by Russian police on drug charges and sentenced to nine and a half years in prison. According to the BBC , Nyirenda was working part-time as a courier when the police claimed they found drugs in a parcel he was carrying. His family said he was contacted for deliveries by text message and had no idea what was in any of the packages he carried. The Wagner Group, founded by a close ally of Vladimir Putin named Yevgeny Prigozhin, frequently recruits prisoners to become its slay-for-pay operatives — a practice deplored by international human rights groups and even … [Read more...] about Hundreds Attend Funeral of Zambian Killed Fighting for Russia in Ukraine
