Connected car apps stealing user data without consent: Report

May 27, 2022 by www.gadgetsnow.com Leave a Comment

Third-party smartphone apps for connected cars belonging to top brands like Tesla, Nissan, Renault, Ford, and Volkswagen are using the vehicle owners' credentials without asking for their consent, a new report claimed on Friday. On top of this, one in five of applications have no contact information, which makes it impossible to report a problem, according to Kaspersky's 'Connected Apps' report which analysed 69 popular third-party mobile apps designed to control connected cars. "The benefits of a connected world are countless. However, it is important to note that this is still a developing industry, which carries certain risks," said Sergey Zorin, Head of Kaspersky Transportation Security. "Unfortunately, not all developers take a responsible approach when it comes to data storage and collection, which results in users exposing their personal information. This data may further be sold on the dark web and end up in untrustful hands," he warned. Cybercriminals might … [Read more...] about Connected car apps stealing user data without consent: Report

You don't have to dig far into the comments of just about any article we write about new cars to find complaints about the ever-growing size and cost of those new cars. Automakers are convinced that size sells in the US market, particularly when it comes to new electric vehicles. But there is a different way, as both Europe and Japan have shown. For example, Autocar reported on Tuesday that Volkswagen will build a small EV called the ID.1 that will sell for around $18,000 (17,000 euros). Due to reach the market in 2025, this diminutive EV will use a cut-down version of VW's MEB platform (as used in the US-market ID.4 crossover, among others) and is expected to have a WLTP range of about 250 miles (400 km) thanks to a 57 kWh battery pack. In fact, Europeans will be somewhat spoiled for choice since the same factory in Spain will also produce versions of the ID.1 for the Cupra and Seat brands. "It made sense to come into EVs top down, but by 2025, we think the time will be right … [Read more...] about If Europe and Japan can have small, cheap EVs, why can’t America?

Audio player loading… There's good news for Android Auto users, as updates for the in-car, phone-mirroring system announced during Google IO 2022 have revealed a new-look UI and better functionality. And it's about time. Google made a number of Android Automotive OS and Android Auto update announcements on Thursday, and the one which really caught my attention was the new UI for the later system, which allows the interface to seamless scale to any screen-size in your car - as shown by the GIF above. It means those using Android Auto - where you connect your smartphone to your vehicle's display either wirelessly or via a USB cable - will see the system take full advantage of the space available. Something it doesn't do currently. Years of frustration Look, I love Android Auto. It's helped me navigate roads not only in my native England, but across Europe and North America for years. Google's clear navigation and real-time traffic makes driving … [Read more...] about One of my major Android Auto frustrations is finally getting fixed
