Disc-free Portable powerhouse The Xbox One S All-Digital is an excellent console with a ton of incredible games owing to a mature library that's been developing since 2013. Most of the third-party games available on the Nintendo Switch are also available on the Xbox One S All-Digital, and are often cheaper than their Nintendo counterparts. It lacks the "wow" factor of the Switch, however, with zero portability, and none of the hot Nintendo franchises like Zelda, Pokémon, and Mario. $250 at Microsoft Pros Huge library of current-gen titles Cheaper than the Nintendo Switch Often has cheaper games More powerful 4K media apps Cons No portability Arguably less-compelling exclusives Requires dedicated space No option for physical game ownership The Nintendo Switch is the best-selling console right now for a reason. DEVELOPERS WITH TOO MUCH TIME on their hands have revealed an unofficial project to tickle the Nintendo Switch into running Windows 10 on ARM. A developer going by the name of Ben, who was one of the people to get Windows 10 on ARM running on the Raspberry Pi, tweeted a pic of a Switch almost running a version of Windows 10 designed to run on ARM-based chip designs. We say 'almost' because Ben's flurry of tweets did show that the Switch running Windows 10 had yet to fully boot to the main operating system. But Ben did manage to get to the 'Recovery' section of Windows 10 and noted that with some tweaks, fixes and bug squashing, the Switch could be fully coaxed into running Windows 10 on ARM. Ben reckons there needs to be a "memory regions fix" and the undertaking "needs massive cleanup and bug fix, additional ACPI and USB work needed". While Nintendo is likely to be turning redder with rage at this, given it doesn't like folks messing with its console software and internals, it's … [Read more...] about GitHub project attempts to coax Windows 10 onto the Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch has soared in popularity over the past few years, and due to this many gamers have tried to jailbreak it. While we've seen instances of certain hackers running Linux on the platform, another individual managed to install Windows 10. Keep in mind that this isn't the full Windows 10 client, but the ARM variant which can run on low-end hardware. While this is an interesting project, it doesn't appear to be working that well at the moment. According to a report by Windows Latest, the developer posted a series of images on Twitter in which he jokingly asked Microsoft and Nintendo support for help getting past the "Blue Screen of Death." Eventually, the developer managed to get to the Windows logo before the operating system boots, but it seems like that's where progress has stalled a little. It'll take countless hours to fix and tweak the system to run Windows 10. At this point it's unclear if it'll ever go past the boot-up logo. We'll keep you posted as soon as we … [Read more...] about Hacker installs Windows 10 on Nintendo Switch

In brief: Companies have long offered video game consoles as a ‘free gift’ to consumers who buy their goods, but they tend to be given away with electronic devices. US jewelry retailer Helzberg Diamonds, however, is offering a Nintendo Switch to customers who spend $1200 or more before December 24. Helzberg Diamonds is no stranger to such giveaways. Back in January, the company ran a promotion that saw it give away an Xbox One S to customers who spent over $999 on products. The Switch costs around $300, so you’re obviously forking out a much higher price to get one for ‘free.’ But there will likely be some people who choose Helzberg Diamonds over other jewelers just because of the console offer. For those after some jewelry that isn’t as expensive but would still like a freebie, the company is giving away a Google Home Bundle with site-wide purchases of $599.99 or more. Normally priced around $129, the smart speaker is a rival to Amazon’s Echo … [Read more...] about Jewelry firm giving away Nintendo Switch with purchases over $1200
