Is Duolingo building a new music-learning app? We interpret the signs
Not one to be restricted to just teaching languages, a recently discovered job posting indicates Duolingo is working on a new music app. The company is keeping its cards close to its chest at the moment as the description doesn’t say much about what the software is planning. According to the posting, Duolingo is currently looking (opens in new tab) for someone who can teach certain musical concepts and has “substantial experience with music education” for both children and adults. Whoever gets hired will be put in charge of ensuring Duolingo Music (as we’ll refer to it) is based on “learning science” to teach music in a way “that is fun, fast-paced, and emphasizes ‘learning by doing’”. The posting also states the “Learning Scientist” will have to take the lead in creating a curriculum hinting the app is still in the early stages of development. Beyond the description and what the company is looking for, not much else can be gleaned about Duolingo’s latest venture. It’s … [Read more...] about Is Duolingo building a new music-learning app? Atrial fibrillation and arrhythmia: Causes, symptoms and treatment
An arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat, is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. People with this condition may have a heart that beats too quickly, too slowly or has an irregular rhythm. While it is normal to feel as if your heart skips a beat occasionally, a frequent irregular rhythm may lead to palpitations, dizziness and other symptoms, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (opens in new tab) (NHLBI). Arrhythmias may occur when there is a problem with the heart's electrical system. In the case of atrial fibrillation, also known as A-fib or AF, the result is that the top chambers of the heart contract irregularly. "Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia," said Dr. Lawrence Phillips, a cardiologist and assistant professor at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. "It's caused [by] irregular impulses coming from the top chamber of the heart." Atrial fibrillation may cause heart disease or worsen existing heart … [Read more...] about Atrial fibrillation and arrhythmia: Causes, symptoms and treatment
Relativity Space hopes to live additively ever after with Wednesday’s launch
Relativity Space, the ambitious company that aims to additively manufacture the majority of its rockets, will try again to make the debut launch of its Terran 1 vehicle on Wednesday evening from Florida. The California-based company has a three-hour launch window that opens at 10 pm local time at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (02:00 UTC on Thursday). The current forecast for the launch attempt is splendid, with a 95 percent chance of acceptable conditions, according to the US Space Force officials operating the range. If recent history is any guide, Wednesday's launch attempt may consume most of the three-hour window. Relativity's first attempt to launch Terran 1, on March 8, was scrubbed near the end of the window due to problems with a fuel-temperature sensor on the second stage. A second attempt three days later did not get off the ground due to an array of issues, including last-second aborts, weather concerns, and a boat in the protected area around the launch site. … [Read more...] about Relativity Space hopes to live additively ever after with Wednesday’s launch

Feral hogs are the invasive menace you’ve never thought about
Think of the worst invasive species you know. Kudzu: smothering trees and houses, growing a foot a day. Burmese pythons: stripping the Everglades of small animals. Asian carp : hoovering streams clean of plankton and swimming toward the Great Lakes. They all came from somewhere else, arrived with no natural predators, outcompeted local flora and fauna, and took over whole ecosystems. But they all have their limitations: Kudzu dies in a hard freeze, carp can’t tolerate salt water, and pythons can’t cover long distances very fast. (Thankfully.) Now imagine a species with all those benefits—foreign origin, no enemies—and no roadblocks to dominance: One that is indifferent to temperature, comfortable in many landscapes, able to run a lot faster than you, and muscular enough to leave a big dent in your car. That describes any of the possibly 6 million feral hogs in the United States, the most intractable invasives that most people have never heard of. Feral hogs—or wild pigs, wild … [Read more...] about Feral hogs are the invasive menace you’ve never thought about
‘Game Changer’ Surveillance Tech Helps Border Patrol Spot Migrants, Say Officials
Border Patrol officials report the increasing use of technology assists agents in being more effective during regular operations. Nintendo shares final Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer and kicks off Mario Day festivities
In a nutshell: Nintendo has shared the final trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie ahead of its April 5 theatrical debut. Additionally, the Japanese gaming giant has launched its annual MAR10 Day festivities with discounts on some of its top games. The minute-and-a-half spot plays more like a video game trailer than a movie preview. It's the exact opposite of what Nintendo attempted to accomplish with its first Super Mario Bros. film back in 1993. "This Ain't No Game," that flick's movie poster read. Nintendo's latest effort features cutting-edge animation and a star-studded voice cast including Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen and Keegan-Michael Key, among others. Charles Martinet, who has voiced both Mario and Luigi in several games since the early 90s, will also appear in "surprise cameos" throughout the film. The film looks to be full of humor that'll get both kids and adults through the doors, and longtime fans will no doubt … [Read more...] about Nintendo shares final Super Mario Bros.
