Elephants Captured From the Wild Live Shorter Lives Than Those Born in Captivity, New Study Shows
Tech & Science Elephants captured from the wild will die sooner than those born in captivity, a new study has found. Researchers from the University of Turku in Finland analyzed the lives of captive Asian elephants to determine how their living situation affects their long-term health. Published in Nature Communications on Tuesday, the article explains how the change captive elephants experience can negatively affect the elephants. The animals experience long-term stress from their capture and changes in their social environments, potentially leading to shorter lives. The elephants also reproduce poorly in captivity. Elephants captured from the wild lived three to seven fewer years than those born in captivity. While not much research has been done on how long Asian elephants live, they likely can survive until their mid-50s. "Our analysis reveals that wild-captured elephants had lower survival chances than captive-born elephants regardless of how they'd … [Read more...] about Elephants Captured From the Wild Live Shorter Lives Than Those Born in Captivity, New Study Shows
Ancient Maya traded dogs for use in religious ceremonies, new study shows
Studies of the bones of dogs, large cats, turkeys, and other animals found in the Maya city of Ceibal show that, as early as 400 BCE, the Mayan elite were importing dogs from distant corners of Guatemala and raising large cats like jaguars in captivity, probably all for use in elaborate rituals at the pyramids in the center of the city. “Animal trade helped sustain many large civilizations, such as the Romans in Europe, the Inca Empire in South America, the Mesopotamians in the Middle East, and the ancient Chinese dynasties,” said archaeologist Ashley Sharpe of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, who led the study. But at Ceibal, the imported animals seem to have served purely ceremonial or political purposes, which may have played an important role in the growth of the powerful Maya state. Captive jaguar The work is based on discoveries at a pyramid near the ceremonial center of Ceibal, an important Maya city in what is now Guatemala (the city is also known as … [Read more...] about Ancient Maya traded dogs for use in religious ceremonies, new study shows
2018 New York Auto Show: Lots of cars you can actually buy, and soon
Though only a few weeks have passed since the Geneva Motor Show, we're experiening another onslaught of new product in New York. But while Geneva mixed in a lot of concept cars with actual road-going machines, the New York Auto Show has production cars reigning supreme. As you scan the list below, take note of just how many production models were unveiled in the Big Apple this week. There's a ton of important things to see, and we encourage you to head down to the Javits Center from March 30 to April 8 to check them all out.Acura made a big deal out of its "concept" RDX in Detroit this year, but anyone who looked at it closely could see the production car underneath. To that end, Acura showed off the actual production version in New York, and we're really looking forward to getting behind the wheel of this NSX-inspired crossover. While Alfa didn't have anything big to debut this year, it did bring out the intense-looking Nero Edizione (aka Black Edition) package for both the Giulia and … [Read more...] about 2018 New York Auto Show: Lots of cars you can actually buy, and soon
2019 Subaru Forester teased before New York show debut
The 2018 New York Auto Show is one for the average consumer. We've got a new Nissan Altima heading that way, as well as a new Toyota RAV4, and now, a new Subaru Forester. The 2019 Subaru Forester will make its debut at the 2018 New York Auto Show at the end of March. Subaru's only got a single teaser image out so far, with no additional information, but it's not like two weeks is a long time to wait. The taillight is the centerpiece of the teaser, and it looks good. It has a kind of pincer look to it, which is something we see more often in the Viziv concepts than in production. If that means we have more of Subaru's conceptual lines to look forward to, color me excited. The Viziv Tourer concept from Geneva was drop-dead gorgeous. It's likely that the new Forester will sport Subaru's new Global Platform. Starting with the 2017 Impreza, Subaru's latest chassis is set to underpin nearly every new Subaru from here on out. It also comprises the bones of the new Ascent three-row SUV.If there's … [Read more...] about 2019 Subaru Forester teased before New York show debut
