Scientists accidentally create new form of ice not expected to exist

February 6, 2023 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

In brief: Researchers at University College London (UCL) and Cambridge discovered a new form of ice. It is not naturally created on Earth but may exist on the icy moons of gas giants. It is just one of 23 types of H2O ice scientists have discovered and has properties that fundamentally change our understanding of water's "solid" state. Although water is a fundamental building block of life and covers over 70 percent of Earth's surface, it has many anomalous properties that even modern science has not reconciled. For example, under immense pressure, water becomes easier to compress. This property is inverse to any other substance. "Water is the foundation of all life," said University College London (UCL) Chemistry Professor Christoph Salzmann. "Our existence depends on it, we launch space missions searching for it, yet from a scientific point of view it is poorly understood." After all, another strange property of water is that as it cools, it becomes dense. This increased … [Read more...] about Scientists accidentally create new form of ice not expected to exist

*** SOTU Livewire *** Joe Biden Gives Second State of the Union Address

February 8, 2023 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Democrat President Joe Biden is set to give his second State of the Union address as Commander in Chief of the United States on Tuesday evening before a joint session of Congress. The speech, set to begin at 9 p.m. ET, is Biden’s third address to a joint session of Congress, having given a first one in 2021, then his first State of the Union address in 2022. Now, he gives his second such address–an annual tradition for presidents speaking in the U.S. House chamber before Senators, House members, members of the Cabinet, and members of the U.S. Supreme Court. Biden’s address comes at a particularly fraught time for his presidency, just days after a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) spy balloon floated across the continental United States before the president ordered it shot down when it had moved off the South Carolina coast in the Atlantic Ocean. It also comes as Biden faces a special counsel investigation over his mishandling of classified documents from his time as Vice President … [Read more...] about *** SOTU Livewire *** Joe Biden Gives Second State of the Union Address

Researchers propose a fourth traffic light for autonomous vehicles

February 7, 2023 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

Through the looking glass: Regulators and motorists remain skeptical of self-driving cars, which are still nowhere near wide adoption. However, a group of researchers proposes that travel times and gas consumption can decrease if drivers let autonomous vehicles direct traffic using a fourth traffic light color. Simulations from North Carolina State University researchers suggest a new kind of traffic light could speed up passage through intersections with the help of self-driving cars and distributed computing. The system would try to balance interactions between traffic lights, human drivers, and autonomous vehicles. Under the proposal, when a certain percentage of vehicles approaching an intersection are self-driving, the light switches to the new color to inform motorists that it's coordinating with autonomous cars. Instead of stopping, going, or slowing down, the light instructs humans to copy the vehicle ahead of them, whether it proceeds through the intersection or waits … [Read more...] about Researchers propose a fourth traffic light for autonomous vehicles

Vietnam’s VinBrain Deploys Healthcare AI Models to 100+ Hospitals

February 7, 2023 by blogs.nvidia.com Leave a Comment

Doctors rarely make diagnoses based on a single factor — they look at a mix of data types, such as a patient’s symptoms, laboratory and radiology reports, and medical history. VinBrain, a Vietnam-based health-tech startup, is ensuring that AI diagnostics can take a similarly holistic view across vital signs, blood tests, medical images and more. “Multimodal data is key to delivering precision care that can improve patient outcomes,” said Steven Truong, CEO of VinBrain. “Our medical imaging models, for instance, can analyze chest X-rays and make automated observations about abnormal findings in a patient’s heart, lungs and bones.” If a medical-imaging AI model reports that a patient’s scan shows lung consolidation, Truong explained, doctors could combine the X-ray analysis with a large language model that reads health records to learn the patient has a fever — helping clinicians more quickly determine a more specific diagnosis of pneumonia. Funded by Vingroup — one of Vietnam’s … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s VinBrain Deploys Healthcare AI Models to 100+ Hospitals

Google will soon default to blurring explicit image search results

February 7, 2023 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

Google has debuted a new default SafeSearch setting, somewhere between "on" and "off," that automatically blurs explicit images in search results for most people. In a blog post timed to Safer Internet Day , Google outlined a number of measures it plans to implement to "protect democracies worldwide," secure high-risk individuals, improve password management, and protect credit card numbers. Tucked into a series of small-to-medium announcements is a notable change to search results, Google's second core product after advertising. A new setting, rolling out "in the coming months," "will blur explicit imagery if it appears in Search results when SafeSearch filtering isn't turned on," writes Google's Jen Fitzpatrick, senior vice president of Core Systems & Experiences. "This setting will be the new default for people who don't already have the SafeSearch filter turned on, with the option to adjust settings at any time." Google's explanatory image (seen above) shows someone … [Read more...] about Google will soon default to blurring explicit image search results

Best dedicated server hosting of 2023

January 12, 2023 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Opting for the best dedicated server hosting means picking a top-quality solution for your online needs. With a dedicated server, there's no sharing of CPU time, RAM or bandwidth, which means your website stays responsive at all times. Shared web hosting can appear to be amazing value, with feature-packed products available for just a few pounds every month. But the reality is often very different, and they're not always the bargains they seem. Cheap web hosting probably mean the web hosting provider is cramming more customers onto each server, for instance. Performance will be poor as there aren't enough resources to go around, and the extra load could mean more server problems and downtime. Dedicated hosting implies that you also get far more control over how the server is configured. You can add and remove software, install updates or tweak all settings, allowing you to optimize the server for your specific needs. Best of all, dedicated hosting contracts … [Read more...] about Best dedicated server hosting of 2023
