The percentage of Americans who follow a gluten-free diet is more than three times higher than the percentage of Americans with celiac disease, the main medical reason the diet is recommended, a new estimate suggests. Researchers found that between 2009 and 2014, the percentage of people in the U.S. with celiac disease remained steady, while the percentage of Americans without the condition who stick to a gluten-free diet rose steadily over the same period. Celiac disease is a disorder in which people can't digest gluten normally. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. In people with the condition, eating the protein prompts the immune system to attack the small intestine, leading to digestive complaints, such as diarrhea, bloating and weight loss. Some people may also give up gluten if they have an allergy to wheat. In more recent years, however, widespread 'Net access has allowed psychologists to document this obsession on a population level and begin to characterize Internet addiction as a distinct set of behaviors, and relate them to other forms of addiction. A recently published survey of Chinese adolescents from Guangzhou has found that signs of Internet addiction strongly correlate with various forms of self-injury, a finding that may place the addiction squarely within the spectrum of impulse control disorders. The survey involved over 1,600 high school students, aged 13-18 years; the questions covered demographic information, additional influences on mental health, and two sets of queries on Internet addiction and self-injurious behavior. SAN DIEGO — Some kids are following a gluten-free diet even though they do not have a medical condition that requires avoiding gluten, and this is worrying some doctors. Gluten-free foods are not necessarily healthier. In fact, they can be higher in calories, and may not be enriched with vitamins and minerals that are important for children, said study co-author Dr. Eyad Almallouhi, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. "Many people think that a gluten-free diet is healthier than the usual diet, which is not always true," said Almallouhi, who presented the findings here Sunday (May 22) at Digestive Disease Week, a scientific meeting focused on digestive diseases.
