I'm standing on a corner near my office in San Francisco. A few blocks away, I can see pointy fortresses and rounded greenhouses. Nearer, a smoking chimney of a tall, blue-roofed inn signals something's cooking inside. Owls and colorful paper airplanes glide by, and frequently an object appears near to me, including a bit of frog brain and ginger root. I'm playing the AR game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and I'm immersed in the world of Harry Potter, Hagrid and other wizards and witches -- along with Muggles and No-Majs.My view is not that different from standing on the same street corner in Pokemon Go, next to a blue Pokestop, where I can see red and yellow gyms a few blocks away and Pokemon spawning at my feet. I've played Pokemon Go on and off for three years and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite since it was released early last Thursday, but in the time I've spent with the new mobile game codeveloped by Niantic and WB Games, it already feels different, because of how it makes use of AR … [Read more...] about Harry Potter: Wizards Unite vs. Pokemon Go
Monster vs redbull
The Ars Technica braintrust of movie fans has no shortage of good, funny, silly, or enjoyably bad kaiju film recommendations. We love our share of stompy monster movies, whether they come in the form of surprisingly fun thrillers, quirky existential ruminations, or even awesome scenes inside of otherwise underwhelming popcorn flicks. Godzilla: King of the Monsters will not be on our list of recommended ultra-monster films anytime soon, if ever. Instead, I'm holding out hope that this week's sloppy, plodding, and logically bankrupt film eventually becomes the subject of a "how did this happen?" documentary, the kind that might explain why the film's scriptwriters, director, and editors all seemed to abruptly quit working simultaneously. Ecologically restorative radiation? Are y’all for serious? [Warning: I go into plot-spoiler territory from here on out, in part to make you think twice about attending this film.] For starters, G:KotM wastes no time testing your patience with … [Read more...] about Godzilla: King of the Monsters film review: *Fart noises*

Nexon has released a new action MMORPG in the Play Store called AxE: Alliance vs Empire, and the company has pulled out all the stops to put out a truly next-gen mobile MMO that matches the experience of its PC and console counterparts. The game features incredibly well-optimized graphics that look amazing and run smooth as silk, a deep action combat system that rewards skilled play, and a wealth of things to do and people to do them with, thanks to server-side tech that helps bear the load more efficiently than most any other mobile MMORPG out there. Starting with the basics, you have two groups and multiple races and classes to choose from. There are no custom skill trees here, so those who want to be a tanky archer or a spellsword are out of luck. Fortunately, the included classes cover most of the necessary bases. You have your mages, ranged classes, two different types of heavy barbarian classes with different attributes and specialties, and of course, your faster classes … [Read more...] about Next-Gen Action MMO AxE: Alliance vs Empire Now Live
