Why it matters: Original programming is the main factor fueling the growth of on-demand streaming platforms. If Hulu wants to compete with major players like Netflix and Amazon, it needs to hit a few more balls out of the park. Based on early impressions, it 'll do just that with The First. Hulu has published a debut trailer for its upcoming original drama about the first manned mission to Mars. The First, from House of Cards creator Beau Willimon, stars Sean Penn as astronaut Tom Hagerty and Natascha McElhone, who plays Laz Ingram. The series will focus not only on the astronauts, but also their families and loved ones, as well as the ground crew back on Earth. Willimon last year said it’s a story about the human spirit, about our indomitable need to reach for unknown horizons, about people working toward the greatest pioneering achievement in human history and about the cost of that vision – the danger and sacrifice – emotional, psychological and physical – … [Read more...] about Hulu shares trailer for The First, a drama about the first manned mission to Mars

Get ready for FIVE new missions to Mars
Main image: Mars is getting more attention than ever. Credit: NASA/JPL-CaltechThe fourth planet from the Sun has been in the news quite a bit recently. First NASA announced that its Curiosity rover had found that methane and organic molecules both exist on Mars, and then there was the dust storm that engulfed most of the planet, causing Curiosity to take a very dirty selfie. We humans are endlessly fascinated by Mars. It's the only other planet in the solar system that we could ever colonize, and it could once have supported ancient life… and yet getting humans to live there successfully will be hugely challenging. The need to know what astronauts can expect when they land on the Red Planet is why space agencies are currently planning no less than five new missions to Mars. Here's what they'll do… NASA InSightLaunch: May 5, 2018 Touchdown: November 26, 2018 Official mission pageAlready halfway through its 301 million mile (485 million km) journey to Mars, … [Read more...] about Get ready for FIVE new missions to Mars
Missions to Mars Were Possible ‘Decades Ago’ but Would Have Killed Astronauts, Former Space Station Commander Says
Tech & Science Astronauts A former astronaut who spent months 250 miles above Earth says humans could have traveled to Mars “decades ago”—but the missions would have almost certainly ended in death. Space programs like NASA and SpaceX have the technology to send astronauts to Mars, retired International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield said. But even with the means to travel, astronauts likely would have died in transit due to the high-risk conditions of a long space outing. “The majority of astronauts that we send on those missions wouldn’t make it,” he told Business Insider. The trip to Mars, about 140 million miles from Earth, could take up to three years. Longer space flights expose astronauts to higher risks of explosion; fuel and food shortages; and cosmic radiation that could cause long-term brain damage, he said. The RS-25 flight engine E2063 was placed on the A-1 test stand in late September for Thursday’s hot-fire test. The test was open to the public to celebrate Founders Day. The event is meant to celebrate 56 years of the rocket engine test site that was originally built to test the rockets used for the Apollo Program that sent to the first humans to the moon. Other activities included exhibits and speakers at the center. The engine is undergoing testing to be used for NASA’s Space Launch System that will carry humans to deep space in future missions. This engine in particular is one of four that will be used to launch the SLS that will be the … [Read more...] about Watch NASA Test A Rocket Engine Live For The Mission To Mars
