MEPs from across the EU have told Breitbart Europe that they will continue to challenge the EU’s COVID pass regime as it comes up for renewal on Thursday. Members of the European Union’s Parliament (MEPs) have told Breitbart Europe that they will continue to fight against the bloc’s regime of COVID passes as their renewal is voted upon by the European Parliament on Thursday. Having been set to expire at the end of this month, the bloc’s Civil Liberties committee voted last week to see the measures extended for another year, justifying the decision by saying that it was important to have the COVID pass system in place “in case it is needed”. However, several representatives elected to the European Parliament from across the EU have told Breitbart Europe that they vehemently oppose such a renewal, with a number of MEPs saying that the measures represent an unjustifiable intrusion on the rights of ordinary people. ‘Are You Serious?’ Eurocrat Claims Bloc Never Pushed People … [Read more...] about MEPs Vow to Fight ‘Immoral’ and ‘Dangerous’ EU COVID Pass Extension

tiktok: How TikTok may save itself from EU sanctions
Chinese-owned short video-sharing app TikTok has agreed to boost European Union users' rights, EU regulators said on Tuesday, averting possible sanctions in a case sparked by multiple complaints from consumer groups in the bloc. The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) in its 2021 complaint said TikTok, which has seen rapid growth worldwide, particularly among teenagers, failed to protect children from hidden advertising and inappropriate content. The company subsequently held discussions with the European Commission and the national network of consumer protection authorities in an attempt to resolve the concerns and now has agreed to a number of changes, the EU executive said. These include the introduction of an additional option allowing users to easily report ads that could potentially encourage children to buy goods or services or persuade their parents or others to buy them for them. Branded content will not be allowed to promote … [Read more...] about tiktok: How TikTok may save itself from EU sanctions
amazon prime: Amazon to allow Prime users to unsubscribe in two clicks after EU complaints
US online retail giant Amazon has made it easier for users to cancel their subscriptions to its fast shipping club Prime with just two clicks, following complaints from consumer groups, the European Commission said. European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), the Norwegian Consumer Council and the Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue took their grievances to the EU executive in April last year. They said users had to go through numerous hurdles such as complicated navigation menus, skewed wording and confusing choices, to unsubscribe from Amazon Prime . The company will now allow users to unsubscribe from Amazon Prime with two clicks via a prominent and clear 'cancel button', the Commission said. The changes will apply to all EU websites and for desktop devices, mobiles and tablets with immediate effect. "Consumers must be able to exercise their rights without any pressure from platforms. One thing is clear: manipulative design or 'dark patterns' must be … [Read more...] about amazon prime: Amazon to allow Prime users to unsubscribe in two clicks after EU complaints
US lawmakers want to follow the EU in mandating a universal charging standard
What just happened? A group of democratic senators have penned a letter to US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo demanding the government take additional steps to address the country's lack of a common charging standard. Last week, lawmakers in the European Union passed legislation requiring electronics sold in the region to use a standard USB-C port for charging by the fall of 2024. Some US leaders want to follow in the EU's footsteps on this matter. The senators argue that the industry's failure to adopt a uniform charging standard is costly to consumers and results in excess e-waste and environmental damage. According to a cited report from the Global e-Waste Monitor, humans generated 53.6 million metric tons of e-waste in 2019 and only 17.4 percent was properly collected and recycled. The letter was signed by Senators Elizabeth Warren, Edward J. Markey and Bernard Sanders. Arguments can be made for and against the creation and enforcement of a uniform charging … [Read more...] about US lawmakers want to follow the EU in mandating a universal charging standard
Broadcom takeover of VMware could be derailed by EU antitrust probe
Broadcom’s $69 billion acquisition of cloud software company VMware is set for a lengthy antitrust investigation in Brussels over regulatory concerns that the deal will harm competition across the global technology industry. Broadcom is already in preliminary discussions with EU officials who will be looking into worries that the merger may lead to abusive behavior, including potential future price rises by the US chipmaker, three people with direct knowledge of the transaction said. Many large acquisitions receive similar interrogation, known in EU circles as a “phase 1” investigation, which typically takes a few months to complete. But those close to the situation suggest that EU authorities plan to push forward with a more detailed “phase 2” investigation, which could take well over a year and may ultimately derail the deal altogether. Nvidia eventually walked away from a proposed $66 billion purchase of chip designer Arm after being subject to a lengthy EU antitrust probe. … [Read more...] about Broadcom takeover of VMware could be derailed by EU antitrust probe
Intel demands $625 million in interest from the EU after antitrust fine is overturned
What just happened? Intel is demanding that the European Commission competition watchdog hand over $624 million in interest charges following the company's successful appeal against a $1.2 billion antitrust fine earlier this year. In January, a European court ruled in support of Intel over its appeal of the 1.06 billion Euros ($1.2 billion) fine that the European Commission levied against it in 2009. The case revolved around Intel allegedly paying manufacturers, including Dell, HP, and Lenovo, to favor its processors over AMD's from 2002 to 2007 by giving them special treatment in the form of rebates. The Commission returned the $1.2 billion payment to Intel after its court defeat. Now, five months after that ruling, Intel has applied to the EU General Court for "payment of compensation and consequential interest for the damage sustained because of the European Commission's refusal to pay Intel default interest." While the amount Intel is demanding represents more than … [Read more...] about Intel demands $625 million in interest from the EU after antitrust fine is overturned
EU extends roaming regulations for telecom providers
The European Union has extended 'Roam-like-at-home' regulations for telecom providers until 2032, the European Commission announced on Thursday. The scheme allows travellers in the EU and the EEA to call, text and surf abroad without extra charges. "With our roaming regulation we have all benefitted from Roam-like-at-home," EU's top official Margrethe Vestager said in an official statement. "This is a very tangible benefit of our European Single Market. Prolonging these rules will keep inter-operator prices competitive, and allow consumers to continue enjoying free-of-charge roaming services for the next ten years." crypto: EU approves regulations to control the unruly crypto market
Cryptocurrency companies will need a licence and customer safeguards to issue and sell digital tokens in the European Union under groundbreaking new rules agreed by the bloc to tame a volatile " Wild West " market. Globally, crypto assets are largely unregulated, with national operators in the EU only required to show controls for combating money laundering. Representatives from the European Parliament and EU states thrashed out a deal late on Thursday on its Markets in Crypto-assets (MiCA) law. "Today we put order in the Wild West of crypto assets and set clear rules for a harmonised market," said Stefan Berger , a German centre-right lawmaker who led negotiations on behalf of the parliament. "The recent fall in the value of digital currencies shows us how highly risky and speculative they are and that it is fundamental to act," Berger said. Crypto markets have tumbled this year, pressured by the collapse of the the USD stable coin and the freezing of … [Read more...] about crypto: EU approves regulations to control the unruly crypto market
EU To Create Emergency Plan For Russian Energy Cut Off
The European Commission has vowed to create a new emergency plan for member states to be able to reduce or remove Russian energy products, including pushing for more renewable sources of energy. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the Commission was working on a draft of an emergency plan to help European Union countries deal with the fallout of limited Russian energy imports as the EU looks to limit the amount of Russian oil, coal and gas being bought. We are preparing emergency plans for Europe,” von der Leyen stated and added, “Energy prices are high. People — rightly so — expect us to do something about it,” Greek newspaper Ekathimerini reports . “We need a good, common plan that the energy flows, or the gas flows, where it is needed most,” she added. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi were headed to Israel Monday as the EU seeks to wean itself off Russian fossil fuel imports. … [Read more...] about EU To Create Emergency Plan For Russian Energy Cut Off
EU forces Amazon to make it easier to cancel Prime subscriptions in Europe
Amazon has agreed to simplify the process of canceling Prime in Europe, meaning customers in the region will be able to end their subscription in just two clicks, the European Commission has announced . The changes, which were implemented as of July 1st, should bring to an end the “multiple pages” filled with “distracting information” and “unclear button labels” that Amazon has previously used to add friction to the cancellation process. The European Commission says the changes apply to the European Union and European Economic Area. Despite the UK having left the former as of the beginning of 2020, The Guardian reports that UK subscribers will also benefit from the two-click unsubscribe process. But when contacted for comment, a spokesperson for Amazon dodged questions about whether it would implement similar changes in the US, saying it has “no changes to announce at this time.” “Customer transparency and trust are top priorities for us,” spokesperson Bradley Mattinger said … [Read more...] about EU forces Amazon to make it easier to cancel Prime subscriptions in Europe
