Why Russia Is So Anti-Gay

· February 11, 2014 ·

Nearly three-quarters of Russians believe that homosexually is morally unacceptable, more than disapprove of other hot-button issues such as extramarital affairs, gambling and abortion. The numbers come from newly released data from the Pew Research Center, which surveyed Russians on their moral attitudes in spring 2013. Russian attitudes toward homosexuality have been at the forefront given the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . Just eight months before the games, Russia's governmental body, the Duma, passed a law making it illegal to distribute homosexual "propaganda" to minors, which includes staging gay pride events and advocating for gay rights. The law also bans foreign same-sex couples from adopting Russian children. On the opening day of the Olympics (Feb. 7), police arrested at least 14 gay rights activists in St. Petersburg and Moscow, according to news reports. It's unclear what charges the activists may face, as Russia also bans unapproved protests. [ 5 Myths … [Read more...] about Why Russia Is So Anti-Gay

Jeramy Johnson 24 Feb 2021 0 Source: Jeramy Johnson / Android Central The smart speaker market has grown quite a bit since Amazon introduced the first Echo in late 2014. However, after introducing the first Echo Show in 2017, the evolution of smart screened devices hasn't progressed nearly so quickly. There have mostly been incremental updates to the devices put out by Amazon, Google, and others like Lenovo, adding bigger screens and (marginally) better speakers, but nothing has really moved the category forward. As it has done several times before, Amazon is poised to usher in the next paradigm shift in smart speaker tech with its latest Echo device, the Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen). I've had the pleasure of using just about every Alexa and Google Assistant-enabled smart speaker over the past few years, so I feel … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) review: Move over Nest Hub Max

Project Power review: Jamie Foxx’s pill-popping thriller has surprising heart

· August 15, 2020 ·

You might think Netflix's Project Power sounds a little unoriginal. It's about a pill that gives people a random superpower for five minutes, like 2011's Limitless with some Marvel Cinematic Universe -style flavoring. But the adventure's central trio -- played by Jamie Foxx , Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dominique Fishback -- plus its clever use of its New Orleans setting, elevate the film above a familiar premise. The 111-minute movie, directed by Nerve' s Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman , hits Netflix on Friday. CNET Culture Entertain your brain with the coolest news from streaming to superheroes, memes to video games. Fishback (whom you may have seen in HBO's The Deuce ) plays Robin, a teenager whose life in the Big Easy is anything but as she's forced to deal Power pills to help with her uninsured mom's medical bills. To survive the mean streets, she's forged a quiet alliance with Gordon-Levitt's Frank, a cop who secretly pops Power pills to give … [Read more...] about Project Power review: Jamie Foxx’s pill-popping thriller has surprising heart

6 Things Russians Think Are More Acceptable Than Being Gay

· February 11, 2014 ·

Russia's enactment of an anti-gay "propaganda" law months before the Winter Olympics 2014 has drawn international reproach. The law forbids positive or neutral portrayals of "non-traditional" relationships anywhere a minor might see them, effectively muzzling gay activists. Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch warns that anti-gay violence appears to be on the rise in Russia, with vigilante groups luring gay men to private places by posing as potential dates and then attacking them. Hard numbers are difficult to track, because many victims fear further violence and retaliation if they report the attacks to police. Nevertheless, the prevalence of anti-gay sentiment in Russia is unmistakable. A Pew Research Center survey conducted in spring 2013 found that 72 percent of Russians say homosexuality is morally unacceptable. Nine percent say being gay is moral, and 9 percent say it isn't a moral issue. [ Why Russia Is So Anti-Gay ] Here's a list of hot-button issues seen as more acceptable … [Read more...] about 6 Things Russians Think Are More Acceptable Than Being Gay
