The next blue moon will occur on the last night of August. Although it will appear no bluer than on any other night, it will nonetheless fit the modern definition of the term by being the second full moon in a calendar month. But this technical meaning of "blue moon" arose fairly recently. The phrase has undergone a strange evolution over the past 500 years. The notion of a blue moon first appeared in writing in the 16th century, according to folklorist Phillip Hiscock, a professor at Memorial University in Newfoundland who has traced the meaning of the phrase through the centuries. "In the English language, the first use that we have is by Cardinal Wolsey" — Henry VIII's notorious advisor, Hiscock said. "Cardinal Wolsey writes about his intellectual enemies who 'would have you believe the moon is blue.'" Aside from the occasional blue-tinged moon that can peak through a volcanic ash cloud, moons almost always hover between white and yellow, and so to call the moon blue was to … [Read more...] about Blue Moon: The Strange Evolution of a Phrase

In a blog post (opens in new tab) published by Android security engineer Jeffrey Vander Stoep, the Googler says the number of severe memory vulnerabilities has significantly dropped in the last three years and suggests it’s all thanks to the OS moving away from memory-unsafe programming languages, C and C++. Three years ago, the majority (65%)of Android bugs were either high-severity or critical-severity memory safety bugs (think out-of-bounds read and write flaws, for example). Since then, Google has been steadily writing new Rust code and adding it to Android (as opposed to simply improving existing code). Now, the number of these flaws has dropped significantly, and they’re no longer the biggest issue plaguing the mobile OS. Less severe vulnerabilities in a constant "From 2019 to 2022 the annual number of memory … [Read more...] about Google says Rust is the key to cutting Android vulnerabilities

In a recent blog post (opens in new tab) , the software giant said Russia will try to use disinformation and cyberattacks to undermine the support Ukraine’s been getting from its western allies - both humanitarian, and military. Furthermore, it said it observed “targeted attacks” against Ukrainian infrastructure, followed by missile strikes. The threat actor apparently being used to this end is called Sandworm. Elite threat actor "We believe these recent trends suggest that the world should be prepared for several lines of potential Russian attack in the digital domain over the course of this winter," Microsoft said. Findings from analyst firm Canalys suggest that US shipments of desktops, notebooks, and workstations were down by 12% in Q3 2022 compared with the same time period last year. Notebooks saw the most significant decline which Canalys attributes to “cautious business spending”, on top of a decline in consumer demand. PC sales 2022 The report claims fewer people were also looking to buy tablets, too, which could be thanks in part to the largely inflated prices in recent months. While Apple’s updated flagship 12.9-inch iPad Pro remained unchanged at $1,099 in the US, other markets saw costs rise significantly with the introduction of the M2 model, with UK prices rising from £999 to £1,249. Canalys research analyst Brian Lynch explains that “the … [Read more...] about PC sales slumped in the US – but it wasn’t bad news for everyone

Tesla. Tesla plans to cut December output of the Model Y at its Shanghai plant by more than 20 percent from the previous month, two people with knowledge of electric vehicle maker's production plan said. The planned production cut comes after Tesla reported record sales in China for November. The Tesla representative replied "false news," without elaborating. The spokesman did not reply to Reuters questions about whether Tesla was denying any output reduction would take place or whether the move was linked to weaker demand. For some years now, the tech industry has been transforming the automobile. We often hear that consumers, enamored with their new smartphones, want some of that same functionality in their new car. Less is said about investors who have grown rich from software companies that sell a product and then charge customers a subscription or fee to unlock certain features. They really do want that functionality in their car company investments, so the era of being offered paid upgrades to your car is here whether you want it or not. Today, Polestar announced a power upgrade for owners of the long-range, dual-motor Polestar 2 , whose two motors generated an equal 201 hp (150 kW) for a combined 402 hp (300 kW). That's more than sufficient to make the dual-motor Polestar 2 a quick car, befitting the new brand's stated identity of being focused on electric performance cars. The only problem is those electric Volvos that share the Polestar 2's CMA platform. Both the Volvo C40 and XC40 have … [Read more...] about Paying for a power boost in an EV—good idea or worst idea?
