It seems that PSVR 2 isn't exactly on track to meet its sales targets, at least according to one notable VR analyst. PSVR 2 looks like it'll sell just shy of 300,000 units by the end of March 2023, according to IDC VR analyst Francisco Jeronimo. In a quote (opens in new tab) to Bloomberg's Takashi Mochizuki, Jeronimo gave an explaination as to why the PS5 headset might be underperforming. "Consumers around the world are facing rising costs of living, rising interest rates and rising layoffs," says Jeronimo, "VR headsets are not top of mind for most consumers under the current economic climate." Jeronimo also states that a PSVR 2 price cut may be in order if Sony wants to "avoid a complete disaster." Exclusive: Sony's PSVR2 is not doing well. IDC's @fjeronimo expects sales of just 270,000 units by the end of March. "I suspect a price cut on the PSVR2 will be needed to avoid a complete disaster," he says.https://t.co/pzmNKsnTjI March 30, 2023 See … [Read more...] about It looks like PSVR 2 probably won’t outsell its predecessor

Zombies and Prosthetic Limbs? The Many Uses of 3D Scanners
Ever wonder why the zombies in the film "World War Z" appear so lifelike? It's not just makeup — some of them were created with the aid of high-tech scanning technology. The company Artec, based in Luxembourg, develops handheld 3D scanners that have been used for everything from Hollywood special effects to the development of prosthetic limbs. The technology makes it possible to create a digital model of an object in the real world, which can then be manipulated with computer design software, said Leonid Volkov, chief business development officer at Artec Group. [ Gallery: 3D Scans in Hollywood and Hospitals ] If, for instance, a company such as Lucas Films, Disney or Pixar (all Artec customers) is working on new 3D animated movie, and the producers want a glass of water to appear in the animation, "you have just two choices — scan it or draw it from scratch, which is much more expensive and time consuming," Volkov told Live Science. The makers of " World … [Read more...] about Zombies and Prosthetic Limbs? The Many Uses of 3D Scanners

These angry Dutch farmers really hate Microsoft
As soon as Lars Ruiter steps out of his car, he is confronted by a Microsoft security guard, who is already seething with anger. Ruiter, a local councillor, has parked in the rain outside a half-finished Microsoft data center that rises out of the flat North Holland farmland. He wants to see the construction site. The guard, who recognizes Ruiter from a previous visit when he brought a TV crew here, says that’s not allowed. Within minutes, the argument has escalated, and the guard has his hand around Ruiter’s throat. The security guard lets go of Ruiter within a few seconds, and the councillor escapes with a red mark across his neck. Back in his car, Ruiter insists he’s fine. But his hands shake when he tries to change gears. He says the altercation—which he will later report to the police—shows the fog of secrecy that surrounds the Netherlands’ expanding data center business. The heated exchange between Ruiter and Microsoft’s security guard shows how contentious Big Tech’s … [Read more...] about These angry Dutch farmers really hate Microsoft
WhatsApp and Signal would leave the UK rather than comply with potential requirement for weakened encryption
What just happened? Messaging platforms WhatsApp and Signal have said they would refuse to weaken their encryption in the UK and will walk away from the country if forced to do so. The ultimatums come as the UK government prepares to discuss the Online Safety Bill, which seeks to prohibit end-to-end encryption in the country. WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart made the statement during a visit to the UK to discuss internet regulations with legislators. "It's a remarkable thing to think about. There isn't a way to change it in just one part of the world. Some countries have chosen to block it: that's the reality of shipping a secure product. We've recently been blocked in Iran, for example. But we've never seen a liberal democracy do that," said Cathcart, as per The Guardian . "The reality is, our users all around the world want security. Ninety-eight percent of our users are outside the UK. They do not want us to lower the security of the product, and just as a straightforward … [Read more...] about WhatsApp and Signal would leave the UK rather than comply with potential requirement for weakened encryption
ChatGPT data leak has Italian lawmakers scrambling to regulate data collection
Today an Italian regulator, the Guarantor for the Protection of Personal Data (referred to by its Italian acronym, GPDP), announced a temporary ban on ChatGPT in Italy. The ban is effective immediately and will remain in place while the regulator investigates its concerns that OpenAI—the developer of ChatGPT—is unlawfully collecting Italian Internet users’ personal data to train the conversational AI software and has no age verification system in place to prevent kids from accessing the tool. The Italian ban comes after a ChatGPT data breach on March 20 , exposing “user conversations and information relating to the payment of subscribers to the paid service,” GPDP said in its press release. OpenAI notified users impacted by the breach and said it was "committed to protecting our users’ privacy and keeping their data safe," apologizing for falling "short of that commitment, and of our users’ expectations." Ars could not immediately reach OpenAI to comment. The company has 20 … [Read more...] about ChatGPT data leak has Italian lawmakers scrambling to regulate data collection
This Samsung app turns your iPhone into a Galaxy S23 – and it feels bizarre
If you’ve ever wondered what an Android-powered iPhone might look like, you need to take Samsung’s newly updated Try Galaxy web app for a spin. Accessible via the Safari web browser (opens in new tab) , Try Galaxy is designed to allow users of non-Galaxy smartphones to test drive new features from One UI 5.1 and the recently launched Galaxy S23 series. The web app – which can be saved to your iPhone home screen as if it were a conventional App Store app – actually went live at the end of last year, but Samsung recently updated the experience to include demos of Galaxy S23 and One UI 5.1-specific features like Nightography, Photo Remaster and customizable home screens. These new features join existing tutorials of Samsung Health, Samsung Kids, Smart Switch, Messages, object erasing and more. Suffice to say, seeing the interface used by some of the best Samsung phones play out on one of the best iPhones is a bizarre experience. I played around with Try Galaxy … [Read more...] about This Samsung app turns your iPhone into a Galaxy S23 – and it feels bizarre
Japan restricts chipmaking equipment exports as it aligns with US China curbs
Japan said it will restrict exports of 23 types of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, aligning its technology trade controls with a US push to curb China 's ability to make advanced chips. Japan, home to major chip equipment makers such as Nikon Corp and Tokyo Electron Ltd, did not specify China as the target of the restrictions, saying manufacturers would need to seek export permission for all regions. "We are fulfilling our responsibility as a technological nation to contribute to international peace and stability," Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura told a news conference. Japan wants to stop its advanced technology being used for military purposes and does not have a specific country in mind, he said. But the decision, coming ahead of a weekend visit to Beijing by Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs Yoshimasa Hayashi , will be seen as a major win for the US, which in October announced sweeping restrictions on access to … [Read more...] about Japan restricts chipmaking equipment exports as it aligns with US China curbs
