Previous Next 1 of 6 Many cyclists have a love-hate relationship with bike lights. On the one hand, they increase safety in low-light conditions and allow riders to see the trail or road after dark. On the other hand, battery operated lights need to be recharged regularly, while those powered by a dynamo mounted to the bike create friction and drag that slows the rider down. But a new option that recently launched on Kickstarter promises to change that by using magnets mounted to the bike itself to create the power necessary to run the light. The principle behind the Magnic Microlights is a surprisingly simple and effective one. The lights employ eddy current induction to generate power, which, in a nutshell, involves changing the properties of a magnetic field to create electricity in a conductor. In this case, energy is drawn from the moving bicycle tire, which generates its own magnetic field as it rotates. That field interacts with the … [Read more...] about These bike lights use magic of magnetism to generate power

Better Than Magic
UDS, the company that brought us Capta (which we loved) and now working on Vavo, has a limited quantity of pads made of what I called "magic alien goo" - a key ingredient used in its products. It's sort of a weird material made in part with polyurethane (PU), which is both sticky and not sticky at the same time - but in exactly the right ways. I have been playing with a PU pad for the last month or so, and it's now become my trusty gym companion. Heck, I can bring it anywhere, slap it on pretty much any surface, and voila - an instant phone holder. It can probably support a light tablet too - definitely a 7". I wouldn't trust it with a 10" for long periods of time, but with enough experimentation, you'll be able to figure out what you're comfortable with. Possible Uses As I mentioned, the greatest use I found for this pad is in the gym. Specifically, the treadmill. I bring my phone with me and on average watch a full TV episode while on an elliptical or a treadmill. I use BT earbuds … [Read more...] about Better Than Magic
Kingdom Hearts 3 gameplay world premiere: Pixar’s magic even works on RPGs
SANTA MONICA, California—Through Japanese interpreters, the director and co-director of Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts series introduced the first-ever playable version of Kingdom Hearts 3 by talking about the series' legacy. In particular, the duo, clad in Mickey Mouse-logo shirts, said they expected people to dive into older games and spinoffs in the 16-year JRPG series based on the quality and scope of this major new sequel. I sighed. Kingdom Hearts is two things: an action-RPG series that injected speed and Disney cuteness into Squaresoft's sluggish early-'00s period... and a mess of confusing plots and spin-off games that combine underwhelming mechanics and nonsensical developments to make my head spin. Nothing could make me want to rewind time and relive that uneven Kingdom history, I thought. That may still be the case after playing roughly 80 minutes of Kingdom Hearts 3. But this brand-new demo was so self-assured—so massive and polished and bombastic—that I … [Read more...] about Kingdom Hearts 3 gameplay world premiere: Pixar’s magic even works on RPGs
