Microsoft Unveils Open Source, Cross-Platform Machine Learning Framework Artificial inteligence and machine learning are dominant themes of new developer tooling being introduced at Microsoft's Build developer conference this week, and ML.NET is a prime example. It's an open source, cross-platform machine learning framework, designed to help .NET developers get in on cutting-edge ML programming without having to learn the underlying technical details associated with creating and tuning machine learning models. One benefit to Visual Studio coders is the ability to work with ML models in native .NET languages like C#, "without having to learn and use Python," as one developer said in comments section of the announcement post. The new framework was originally developed at Microsoft Research and was launched as part of the .NET Foundation. Designed to complement ML and AI development with the company's existing tools such as Azure Machine Learning and Cognitive Services, the early … [Read more...] about Microsoft Unveils Open Source, Cross-Platform Machine Learning Framework — ADTmag

We are now a connected global community where many digital natives cannot remember a time before the iPhone. The rise of smart homes means that we are increasingly attaching our lighting, door locks, cameras, thermostats, and even toasters to our home networks. Managing our home automation through mobile apps or our voice illustrates how far we have evolved over the last few years. However, in our quest for the cool and convenient, many have not stopped to consider their cybersecurity responsibilities. The device with the weakest security could allow hackers to exploit vulnerabilities on our network and access our home. But this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Businesses and even governments are starting to face up to the vulnerabilities of everything being online. Sophisticated and disruptive cyberattacks are continuing to increase in complexity and scale across multiple industries. Areas of our critical infrastructure such as energy, nuclear, water, aviation, and critical … [Read more...] about How AI and machine learning are redefining cybersecurity
Machine learning is making substantial impacts on businesses around the world, but many organizations struggle to understand where and when to optimally use ML. To enable successful deployments, businesses must first recognize which problems are most amenable to ML and, second, ensure the right processes are in place to evaluate its impact. In general, ML algorithms build relationships between inputs and outputs by leveraging statistical properties of the data. As researchers expose the algorithm to more data, it learns and adapts. Eventually, the relationship becomes accurate enough that the algorithm generalizes to predict outputs from new inputs. Companies can use these predictions to uncover new insights and power business automation. Above: Vertical sample use case Finding problems ML can solve So how can you identify a business goal you can address with ML? Here is a typical set of steps to consider. 1. Is the goal substantive, quantifiable, and measurable? First, the goal you … [Read more...] about How (and whether) to implement machine learning in your organization
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are terms which have been thrown around a lot in the tech industry over the last few years, but what exactly do they mean? Anyone vaguely familiar with sci-fi tropes will probably have an idea about AI, though they may view it as a little more sinister than what’s around today. The two terms are often conflated and, incorrectly, used interchangeably, particularly by marketing departments that want to make their technology sound sophisticated. In fact, artificial intelligence and machine learning are very different things, with very different implications for what computers can do and how they interact with us. It starts with Neural Networks Machine learning is the computing paradigm that’s lead to the growth of “Big Data” and AI. It’s based on the development of neural networks and deep learning. Typically this is described as imitating the way humans learn, but that’s a bit of a misnomer. … [Read more...] about Artificial Intelligence vs Machine Learning: what’s the difference?
Traditionally, enterprises have focused their data strategies around business intelligence (BI), but the rise of predictive and prescriptive analytics platforms, in part thanks to machine learning and artificial intelligence, is changing the equation. Even business intelligence itself is evolving, tipping in capabilities previously exclusive to business analytics platforms. Analysts and consultants agree that understanding the distinctions between business intelligence and other analytics platforms, as well as the value each brings to the enterprise, matters significantly in getting your data strategy right. Here, we break down where business intelligence fits in the spectrum of analytics offerings available today — and how business analytics is evolving, thanks to shifts in tools, tactics, and personnel needs.Business intelligence vs. business analyticsAnalytics in the broadest sense applies to all technology-enabled problem-solving activities. Experts generally divide … [Read more...] about Business intelligence vs. business analytics: Where BI fits into your data strategy
