Facepalm: Apple's iOS 15 (and iPadOS 15 by nature) has been an extremely buggy release. In addition to several flaws that crippled iPhone 13s, the operating system has had at least two actively exploited zero-day vulnerabilities that Apple engineers had to patch quickly. On Monday, Apple issued an urgent security fix for a zero-day flaw in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 that hackers are actively exploiting. The patch came the same day it released iOS 15.0.1. The bug (CVE-2021-30883) causes a memory-corruption error in the IOMobileFrameBuffer, a kernel function that allows developers to allocate how their apps use system memory to control the display. "An application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges," read Apple's patch notes. "Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited." The patch notes did not go into great detail about the bug. However, shortly after Apple released iOS and iPadOS 15.0.2, security researcher Saar Amar … [Read more...] about Apple rushes out iOS 15.0.2 just hours after 15.0.1 to patch actively exploited zero-day bug

A company that makes VR solutions to help reduce the effects of social isolation, is bringing its technology to senior care facilities in the northeast. The partnership between Rendever , a VR company founded by MIT alumni, and Vantage Point Retirement Living is aimed at bettering the lives of seniors affected by life-altering mental health conditions, including through a memory care program for those suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia. There's a growing body of research on the effectiveness of VR and memory. In 2018, researchers at the University of Maryland conducted the first in-depth study to determine whether immersive virtual reality environments are better for learning and memory retention than traditional platforms. Published in the journal Virtual Reality , the results showed that "immersion aids," which permit better spatial awareness than desktop screens, draw on the power of spatial mnemonics to aid memory. Rendever's VR technology is aimed at combatting … [Read more...] about VR for mental health and memory
When 34-year-old engineer and inventor Dmytro Kostyk founded his Internet of Things (IoT) company Kodisoft in 2003, he knew there was a rough journey ahead. "In Ukraine, you have a top supply chain, but to get something here in the country, you have to move mountains," he says. More than a decade and a half later though, Kodisoft has helped transform the dining experience for customers and restaurateurs alike with its interactive table technology, which is now used by 19 restaurants in cities including Kyiv, Barcelona, London and Dubai. These interactive dining tables can be used for ordering food and drinks, summoning restaurant staff and paying the bill, but also offer entertainment features like music, children's games and the ability to share photos and videos with other guests. SEE: Developers wanted: Companies are hiring, and these are skills they're looking for To date, Kodisoft has sold more than 1,000 of its smart tables which are now used in shopping … [Read more...] about Despite huge challenges, this country is trying to build its own start-up ecosystem
51% of Asia Pacific small to medium-sized businesses that were hit with a cyber incident in the past year saw the cost of that incident exceed $500,000, according to a survey conducted by Cisco. Sampling 3,750 businesses employing between 10 and 999 employees in 14 countries around the region, Cisco said 83% reported an incident in excess of $100,000, and 13% had an incident cost more than $1 million. The survey was conducted between April and July. In Australia, where 306 qualifying businesses responded, the numbers were more stark, with 64% reporting an incident costing over $500,000, and 33% saying they were hit more than $1 million in cost. For businesses that ran simulation exercises, Cisco said 85% of respondents found issues in their defences. "Of those that identified weaknesses, 95% said the exercises revealed issues with not having the right technology solutions in place to detect a cyber attack or threat. The same number found they had too many technologies and … [Read more...] about Cyber incident impact sits at over $500,000 for half of small to medium APAC businesses
Global firms working on brand cryptocurrencies take a cue from Facebook's Libra case Watch Now Facebook's plan to take over the world of cryptocurrency and online payments has not had the most auspicious start. Given Facebook's massive customer reach, encompassing billions of users, it was no surprise that the social network would consider a move into finance in order to expand its influence further and beyond the revenue steams offered by data collection, analytics, and targeted advertising. The first punt, Messenger payments, failed to capture the interest or imagination of users in areas including the UK and France, leading the tech giant to close the person-to-person (P2P) payments system in some countries , despite a successful rollout in the United States. When it comes to public consumption of nutrition studies, an old adage applies: Everything in moderation. The latest study looking at what you should eat involves eggs. Despite decades of advice that the cholesterol in eggs is bad for you, researchers in Canada now report evidence that eggs might reduce another heart disease risk factor — high blood pressure . The scientists found egg proteins that, in laboratory simulations of the human digestive process , seem to act like a popular group of prescription medications in lowering blood pressure. The findings are detailed in the Feb. 11 issue of the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry . Important caveats: Funding for the research came from livestock and poultry industry groups. And the researchers emphasize that further study is needed to determine if the proteins actually works in humans. Meanwhile, federal guidelines for limiting egg consumption have not changed because of the study. … [Read more...] about Study Finds Sunny Side of Eggs
Eggs give many of us the fuel we need to start the day, but leftover eggshells of the future could provide fuel to start hydrogen cars. The fragile leftovers can be ground up and used to filter out carbon dioxide, a pesky by-product of hydrogen production , engineers said. "The key to making pure hydrogen is separating out the carbon dioxide," said L.S. Fan, a chemical and biomolecular engineer at Ohio State University. Calcium carbonate—the main component in eggshells and antacid tablets—serves as the active ingredient in Fan and his team's process when heated up. The material soaks up acidic carbon dioxide gas during hydrogen-producing reactions, making them more efficient. In fact, it's now the most effective carbon dioxide absorber ever tested, Fan said. In spite of eggshell's efficiency, however, our breakfast leftovers aren't expected to convert the U.S. into a hydrogen economy any time soon—not even if we ground up all 91 billion of our eggshells from … [Read more...] about Eggshells Could Help Power Hydrogen Cars
New 3D images reveal the underbelly and plumbing system of the most active volcano in the Galapagos Islands for the first time, according to a new report. A team of researchers based at the University of Rochester buried 15 seismometers — tools used to measure the velocity and direction of waves generated by earthquakes — beneath the Sierra Negra volcano, the largest and most active volcano in the Galapagos Islands , located roughly 575 miles (925 kilometers) off the coast of Ecuador. Seismic waves travel at different speeds depending on the type of material they pass through, so the researchers were able to use the data to differentiate fresh magma from cold crust beneath the volcano and create 3D images showing the location of different lava sources feeding the volcano. The volcanoes of the Galapagos Islands are some of the most active volcanoes in the world, and have generated more than 50 eruptions in the last 200 years. The new images will help scientists understand … [Read more...] about Guts of Galapagos Volcano Revealed in 3D Images
