In much the same way as they take centre stage in our living rooms, TVs remain the big draw at IFA in Berlin, Europe’s largest consumer tech show. Having burnt out his retinas casting judgment over the hundreds of goggle boxes unveiled at this year’s show, Kevin Lynch takes us through his pick of the new displays.Samsung 8K Q900R QLED In terms of TVs, the big talking point at IFA 2018 has very much been whether 8K is the format of the future or the present.Despite the glaring absence of native content in the format, or the fact that most folk are just coming to terms with adopting 4K into their homes, Samsung unequivocally came out all guns blazing for 7680×4320 resolution – four times that of UltraHD – with confirmation of an October release date for the 8K Q900R QLED TVs proving a standout announcement at this year’s show.Samsung’s argument is that as the demand from consumers for ever larger screens continues apace, 85-inches of 8K can … [Read more...] about The TVs of IFA 2018: The best screens unveiled by Samsung, LG, Philips and Toshiba

What is the best Android phone out there? Up until recently, the Samsung Galaxy S9 would have been the most fitting candidate for that title, and perhaps it still is, but a new competitor may be about to give its throne a nice shaking. That's the just-announced LG G7 ThinQ. How does it compare against the S9? Let's find out.DesignOn the surface, the LG G7 and the Galaxy S9 seem to have a lot in common. Another is that LG chose to go with the controversial notch design for its flagship, while the S9 has a more streamlined look. Home / News / Why Samsung has nothing to gain from embracing an iPhone X-style notch Samsung has worked diligently over the past few years to shed its reputation of being an Apple copycat and started blazing its own trail in smartphone design. It’s imperative that Samsung not jump on that bandwagon. We first need to understand why the notch exists anyway. Samsung’s Galaxy Note lineup kickstarted the trend of smartphones with substantial displays and while initial models of such handsets were difficult … [Read more...] about Why Samsung has nothing to gain from embracing an iPhone X-style notch

And while we had a tough time saying good-bye to Samsung's old moniker, QLED promises to be an even better screen technology than SUHD ever was. It's so confident in QLED that Samsung's 2018 TV line-up offers six series of QLED screens – the Q9FN, the Q8FN, Q8CN, the Q7FN, Q7CN and Q6FN. These series almost directly mirror Samsung's line-up of 2017 TVs.But what is QLED? Why is it better than traditional LED? How does QLED stack up against OLED? Does Samsung's marketing department hate us? These are all excellent questions, and ones that you can find the answers to right here! What is QLED?It's a bit of an enigma, to put it lightly. Literally QLED means – or we suppose it means – quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED, not to be confused with OLED TVs), but this Samsung-baked concept is basically just the latest set of enhancements to the same quantum dot technology that the … [Read more...] about QLED TV: Samsung’s latest television acronym explained
