Amazon is updating its small and inexpensive Fire 7 tablet for the first time in three years , and it’s bringing some crowd-pleasing features: the updated tablet will feature USB-C charging, better battery life, and faster performance. Amazon is, however, raising the starting price tag a tad — from $49.99 to $59.99. Amazon says that the tablet’s quad-core processor is “30 percent faster” and that it’ll have 2GB of RAM instead of 1GB. In theory, the extra memory should make it so you can load more web pages at a time, and you won’t have to wait around for apps to start back up as often when you’re switching between them. The company also says the tablet will last about 40 percent longer between charges, estimating you’ll be able to do about 10 hours of browsing or video watching. Asus has added a 16-inch option to its clever (and generally good) ROG Flow lineup. It’s called the Flow X16, and it seems like a 2-in-1 beast for multimedia and even some high-end gaming. While the 13.4-inch X13 and Z13 tablets could do some gaming, they weren’t capable of playing games smoothly at high settings — at least not without the pricey, powerful XG Mobile external GPU-meets-docking station. The X16, on the other hand, seems like a solid gaming laptop in its own right given that it can be configured with up to AMD’s Ryzen 9 6900HS and Nvidia’s RTX 3070 Ti (100W maximum graphics power). At I/O 2022, Google announced the much-awaited successor to the Pixel Buds – the Pixel Buds Pro . Google did share quite a few details about its upcoming earbuds, but it also missed out on a few, like how fast will it charge. Well, the upcoming earbuds appeared in a filing in the Wireless Power Consortium , confirming that the Buds Pro will support wireless charging while also revealing the charging speed of upcoming Google earbuds. The certification mentions the charging rate at 2.5W via Qi Wireless charging, the same as the original Pixel Buds from 2020. The wireless charging speed is not the fastest in the segment, but it matches up with the competition and is a little fast compared to the AirPods Pro, which charges wirelessly at 1.7W. Robotics engineering student Ken Pillonel has followed up his USB-C iPhone mod with a modified pair of AirPods with a USB-C port for charging — replacing Apple’s proprietary Lightning port. Although the result is simple (USB-C cable goes in, power goes up), it was an engineering challenge that Pillonel says consumed “pretty much all my weekends for a few months.” It comes around a month after he completed a project that brought a Lightning port to an Android phone . Pillonel plans to release a full-length video explaining the project in the coming weeks, but for now, he’s put out a short clip showing his modded AirPods being charged with the same USB-C cable as a MacBook and his previously modded iPhone. He plans to open source the project like he did with the USB-C iPhone for others to follow in his footsteps.
