Hate Robocalls? Congress Might Actually Do Something About It
Tired of hearing your phone ring and looking at the caller ID only to be greeted with an unknown number from halfway across the globe? You're in luck. We're one step closer to a robocall-free future, thanks to bill making its way through Congress. The House on Wednesday passed the Stopping Bad Robocalls Act, which grants the FCC more authority to go after robocall operators and gives the commission more time to take action; the statute of limitations would jump from one year to up to four years for callers violating robocall prohibitions. The bill also requires mobile carriers to enforce caller authentication and permits them to enable call-blocking features (as long as important messages aren't affected). Carriers also can't charge customers for the technology. The bipartisan bill—from Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr., Ranking Member Greg Walden, and others—passed 429-3. Voting against it were Republican Reps. Andy Biggs of Arizona and Thomas … [Read more...] about Hate Robocalls? Congress Might Actually Do Something About It
Bernie Sanders vows to break up huge ISPs and regulate broadband prices
Presidential candidate and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders yesterday released a plan to overhaul the US broadband market by breaking up giant providers, outlawing data caps, regulating broadband prices, and providing $150 billion to build publicly owned networks. "The Internet as we know it was developed by taxpayer-funded research, using taxpayer-funded grants in taxpayer-funded labs," the Sanders plan said. "Our tax dollars built the Internet, and access to it should be a public good for all, not another price-gouging profit machine for Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon." If enacted, Sanders' "High-Speed Internet for All" plan would be the polar opposite of the Trump administration's treatment of broadband companies and far more aggressive than the regulatory approach of the Obama administration. Sanders pledged to "use existing antitrust authority to break up Internet service provider and cable monopolies," specifically by "bar[ring] service providers from also providing content and … [Read more...] about Bernie Sanders vows to break up huge ISPs and regulate broadband prices
Tomb Raider Will Be Enhanced for GeForce RTX Cards
On Sept. 14, Square Enix will release Shadow of the Tomb Raider, a continuation of 2013's Tomb Raider and 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider. It's also now set to be a showcase for what Nvidia's new GeForce RTX graphics cards can do on PC. Yesterday, Nvidia revealed its next generation of gaming graphics cards called the RTX 20 series. The line-up consists of three new cards, the RTX 2070, RTX 2080, and RTX 2080 Ti. You'll pay at least $499 to own one and $999 if you want that Ti card, but in return you'll get to experience the new Turing architecture and the ray tracing features it promises. Of course, in order to experience this new power, you need games to support it. The RTX cards launch on Sept. 20, six days after Shadow of the Tomb Raider. However, developer Eidos Montreal is planning a post-launch update to the game on PC to add support for Nvidia's ray tracing technology. The video included above was released to show-off how good the game looks and what these new cards have allowed … [Read more...] about Tomb Raider Will Be Enhanced for GeForce RTX Cards
New Horizons enters safe mode 9 days before Pluto rendezvous [Updated]
Update, 10pm ET: NASA has announced that "There was no hardware or software fault. The underlying cause was a hard-to-detect timing flaw in the spacecraft command sequence that occurred during an operation to prepare for flyby." Science operations are set to resume on July 7. Original story: In nine short days, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft will make history by becoming the first spacecraft to fly past Pluto. Unfortunately on July 4, just days before the team was to send the approach command to the vehicle, an anomaly occurred at 1:54pm EST and communications with the spacecraft were lost. Communications were quickly restored through the deep space network (DSN), with signal confirmation at 3:15pm EDT. The spacecraft’s autonomous autopilot recognized a problem and switched from the main to the backup computer—as it’s programmed to do. The autopilot then placed the spacecraft in “safe mode,” and commanded the backup computer to reestablish … [Read more...] about New Horizons enters safe mode 9 days before Pluto rendezvous [Updated]
