Epic Games has filed another antitrust complaint against Apple, this time in the European Union. Filed with the European Commission, Epic has accused the iPhone maker of enforcing a "series of carefully designed anti-competitive restrictions" that have harmed competition when it comes to app distribution and payment processes. "Apple uses its control of the iOS ecosystem to benefit itself while blocking competitors and its conduct is an abuse of a dominant position and in breach of EU competition law," Epic Games said in an announcement . In the announcement, Epic Games said Apple's decision to block Fortnite -- a popular game created by the games developer -- from the iOS platform has harmed the company. It added that Apple has since launched its own gaming distribution service, Apple Arcade, while allegedly barring Epic Games from the doing the same. "Consumers have the right to install apps from sources of their choosing and developers have the right to compete in a fair … [Read more...] about Epic Games extends legal fight against Apple to the European Union

Apple demands sales data for hundreds of Steam games as part of its legal battle with Epic
What just happened? Apple is still locked in a heated legal battle with Epic Games regarding the former's App Store fees and alleged monopolistic business practices, but now, Apple is dragging a third party into the fray. According to a new legal filing, Apple wants Valve to provide it with comprehensive sales data on 436 Steam games. The request is a rather bizarre one. Apple seems to be implying that, because Epic could theoretically publish its games on Steam, it should have access to non-public sales data on hundreds of third-party games for use in its legal battle. Valve, for its part, completely disagrees with Apple's opinion. In its "position" statement , Valve refuses to produce the documents Apple requests (or, at least, most of them) and provides paragraph after paragraph of reasons why. One of Valve's more amusing refutations follows below: Apple claims the information it demands is uniquely obtainable from Valve, yet much of what Apple seeks is sales and … [Read more...] about Apple demands sales data for hundreds of Steam games as part of its legal battle with Epic
Pakistan’s new cyber law hit by legal challenge just 1 day after it’s approved
After a year of political wrangling, Pakistan’s National Assembly approved a draconian new cybercrime law last Thursday—just one day later it faced its first legal, constitutional challenge. The Prevention of Electronic Cyber-crimes Bill (PECB) has digital rights activists up in arms as they say it could see innocent citizens jailed or fined for criticising the authorities or government. The reach of the law is also a cause for concern, as it says: “It shall also apply to any act committed outside Pakistan by any person if the act constitutes an offence under this Act and affects a person, property, information system, or data located in Pakistan.” The bill will become law after president Mamnoon Hussain signs it—a mere formality now that it has been approved by the upper and lower houses. But on Friday, opposition party Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) challenged law in Lahore's High Court. PAT deputy secretary general Ishtiaq Chaudry argued that the new PECB law is … [Read more...] about Pakistan’s new cyber law hit by legal challenge just 1 day after it’s approved
Valve gets dragged into Apple and Epic’s legal fight over
Apple's bitter legal dispute with Epic Games over the distribution of Fortnite on iOS has now managed to rope in Valve. Apple has subpoenaed the Steam maker for a wide range of PC game sales data it says is crucial to its case. But Valve is fighting back against that subpoena, saying its information is proprietary, not relevant to Apple's case, and would be costly and difficult to generate. As discussed in a joint letter from Apple and Valve filed with the Northern District of California court this week, Apple's November subpoena seeks two large categories of information that Valve is refusing to provide: Documents sufficient to show Valve’s: (a) total yearly sales of apps and in-app products; (b) annual advertising revenues from Steam; (c) annual sales of external products attributable to Steam; (d) annual revenues from Steam; and (e) annual earnings (whether gross or net) from Steam; as well as (a) The name of each App on Steam; (b) the date range when the App was … [Read more...] about Valve gets dragged into Apple and Epic’s legal fight over
