Who doesn’t have a love/hate relationship with their laptop battery? It lets us be mobile, but it also chains us to that little battery life gauge and the dreaded decay of performance as time goes on. But by following certain best practices, you can move the relationship more firmly toward the “love” side. Save cycles, save your battery All laptop batteries are built to handle a certain number of charge cycles, usually somewhere around 500 full cycles — and sometimes even more. Essentially, a charge cycle equals one full discharge down to zero percent and then a recharge back up to 100 percent. A discharge down to 50 percent and then back to 100 percent would equal half a cycle. Over time, each charge cycle decreases a battery’s capacity from its design specifications, meaning that the fewer times you drain it, the longer the battery last — all other things being equal. And so, where do you start? You can begin by visiting the power settings corner … [Read more...] about How to care for your laptop’s battery and extend its life

Microsoft has released a fix for its ZIP extraction failure, which affects the few users who installed the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, version 1809, before the rollout was halted. The cumulative update KB4464455 has been offered to Windows Insiders in the Slow and Release Preview rings, bringing the Windows 10 1809 build up to 17763.107. The update contains the same fixes that Microsoft released in preview on October 16, which addressed a Task Manager issue showing incorrect CPU usage and several other bugs. It also includes two additional fixes, including one for the ZIP bug that surfaced a few weeks after Microsoft had pulled the Windows 10 version 1809 release due to users experiencing severe data loss after installing the update. "We fixed the issue where dragging (extracting) files from a .zip file in File Explorer to a write-protected location you don't get a "Do you want to replace these files" prompt and the copy action fails silently," explained Microsoft. Microsoft today released two new Windows 10 previews for PCs. The first build is from the RS5 branch, which represents the Windows 10 update the company plans to release later this year, and the second is from the 19H1 branch, which, as its name indicates, will arrive in the first half of next year. It’s rare for the Windows Insider program to get two new builds on the same day (the last time was in March), but it’s certainly happening more often nowadays than in previous years. Microsoft is becoming more comfortable developing two updates of Windows 10 at once. Windows 10 is being developed as a service, meaning it receives new features on a regular basis. Microsoft has released five major updates so far: November Update, Anniversary Update, Creators Update, Fall Creators Update, and April 2018 Update. Windows 10 build 17723 This RS5 build introduces a mixed reality feature called Flashlight, which lets you peer into your physical environment without removing your … [Read more...] about Microsoft releases two new Windows 10 previews with mixed reality, Edge, time, update, and gaming improvements

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case.Surface problemsIt looks like last year’s Surface Pro (2017) is freezing after installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, with the cause apparently being the Intel SSD6 drive, which at the moment is incompatible with the update. There also seems to be a problem with the Surface Studio … [Read more...] about Windows 10 April 2018 Update is causing problems with some Microsoft Surface devices
After several weeks of delays, on April 30 Microsoft gave the green light and started rolling out the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) to compatible devices. Initially, the company made available the new version using the Media Creation Tool and Update Assistant, and then, on May 8, it became available more broadly through Windows Update. This is the fifth major release of Windows 10, which introduces a few new features, such as Timeline to resume activities you were working on in the past, and Nearby sharing to easily share files and links without complicated setups. Also, the new version includes numerous improvements in the Settings app, Microsoft Edge, Windows Defender Security Center, Fluent Design, and a slew of other small changes. While this is a significant update meant to improve Windows 10 over the previous releases, the rollout is not going as smoothly as everyone would have hoped. Even after weeks of Microsoft fixing last minute bugs, some frustrated users have … [Read more...] about Windows 10 April 2018 Update biggest problems and complaints
