Jaguar Land Rover is very gung ho about its Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) unit, which manages everything from customized cars to special-edition performance models. So gang ho, in fact, that it’s apparently planning a sub-brand within this sub-brand.It may share a name with a certain 1990s Subaru sports car, but SVX is actually a proposed line of niche models from Land Rover that would offer maximum off-road performance. The SVX badge will be used for models with “added capability,” SVO boss John Edwards told Car and Driver in a recent interview. It will make up a third category alongside road-oriented SVR performance models and more luxurious SVAutobiography editions. There’s no telling exactly what “added capability” entails, but Edwards said the new models will be inspired by off-road races like the Camel Trophy and Dakar Rally. That hints at a type of vehicle that can not only conquer all types of terrain, but do it quickly.Current Land Rovers … [Read more...] about SVX: It’s not a Subaru, it’s Land Rover’s new off-road performance sub-brand

If you laid 5,805,846 Lego bricks end-to-end, they’d stretch from London’s Tower Bridge to Paris, a distance of almost 200 miles. Or, if you wanted to make a big statement, you could use those bricks to set a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest Lego structure. That’s what Land Rover did this week with the live reveal of the new Land Rover Discovery SUV in Warwickshire, England, according to a company press release. We’ve already covered the details of the Discovery’s fifth and most significant ever makeover, but the spectacle of its unveiling was newsworthy itself. Complete with a rappelling adventurer, jumping horses, and a sailing team driving through almost three feet of water, the Land Rover launch team stressed the Discovery’s air of adventure, versatility, and excitement. It was all on, over, through, and around the 42.6-foot-high Lego version of the London Tower Bridge, representing the Land Rover theme of going … [Read more...] about Adventurers, equestrians, and sailing team helped launch the Land Rover Discovery
Many automakers reveal important models before the L.A. Auto Show, but few allow the public to lay eyes on these vehicles alongside media.Land Rover decided to break the mold a bit with the introduction of its all-new Discovery. On Tuesday, the three-row SUV was given an open-air reveal at a pop-up venue in L.A.’s Venice neighborhood, next to some seriously cool action sports equipment. The active lifestyle environment fit nicely with Land Rover’s new model, which the automaker says is its most versatile yet. With seating for seven passengers, a premium cabin, innovative convenience features, and sophisticated off-road goodies, the 2017 Discovery is your new go-anywhere-in-comfort SUV. It’s also a handsome thing, with a rounded body and striking exterior touches that look considerably upmarket for the price ($50,985, including destination charge, for the Discovery SE, the least expensive of several variants).Among the car’s highlights are seats that can … [Read more...] about Go anywhere in comfort in Land Rover’s new Discovery with advanced tow assist
Good news British 4×4 fans: The Land Rover Discovery is back … but not how you might have hoped. We’ve been speculating a lot lately on Land Rover’s next move. Its iconic Defender is being sent out to pasture, and its LR4 (aka ‘Discovery’ globally) is overdue for a revamp. After the flop of its DC100 concept, Land Rover seemed unsure how to proceed. Rumor that the British brand had copyrighted the “Landy” moniker emphasized that lost feeling. Now, though, Land Rover announced that it’ll be bringing an all-new concept to the 2014 New York Auto Show later this month called the “Discovery Vision Concept”. Intriguingly, the car won’t just show a new direction for the LR4. Instead, it’ll preview a whole new line of premium family SUVs.Gerry McGovern, Design Director and Chief Creative Officer for Land Rover commented, “Discovery has been pivotal in helping to build the foundations of the Land Rover brand. … [Read more...] about Land Rover’s New York-bound ‘Discovery Vision Concept’ will debut new sub-brand
Land Rover is going through a bit of an identity crisis. The company started off as the British Jeep, making tough off-roaders for farmers and the British army. That is hard to believe today; luxury trucks like the Range Rover and LR4 fill Land Rover showrooms, while the utilitarian Defender is a niche model. Over the past thirty years, the company did a complete “about-face,” and according to boss John Edwards, it’s about to do another one.Edwards is confident that the new Defender, based on the DC100 concept (pictured) from the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, will be Land Rover’s best seller. he said the Defender will help Land Rover break out of the luxury segment, and that a simple, affordable design with many body styles will increase sales volume.“The leisure market is huge,” Edwards said. “We get a very significant share of the premium SUV market that BMW and Porsche compete in, but the leisure segment is bigger, it’s growing and our … [Read more...] about Will the Defender be Land Rover’s new best seller?
Back in October, we reported that a new Jeep Grand Wagoneer was on the way, and that it would provide a competitive capstone to the American company’s strengthening lineup.A new report by Autocar confirms Jeep’s plans, and it’s clear that the range-topping Wagoneer has developed into something of a passion project for brand CEO Michael Manley.“I think that vehicle will very, very effectively compete with premium SUVs,” he said. “I’ve always talked about Grand Wagoneer and that for me is a big focus and will fill out the brand at the top.”The new Wagoneer will likely be the largest vehicle under the Jeep banner and feature three rows of seating, which will pit it head-to-head with the Land Rover Discovery. And that’s something that Manley is perfectly comfortable with.“With Grand Cherokee we’ve proven we can compete at the very premium end of the segment,” he continued. “But [Range Rover is] the only … [Read more...] about Watch out, Land Rover: Jeep’s new flagship SUV has its sights set on luxury 4x4s
Most Discovery Sports will never be driven off-road, or even through more than a quarter-inch of snow. That’s a shame, because this little SUV can tackle just about anything … and do it in style. This week, like a herd of hungry Caribou, the nation’s automotive journalists made a great migration to Reykjavik, Iceland. We all came here to the top of the world to drive the new 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport in one of the toughest winter climates on Earth. The location seems at once completely natural and totally absurd. Natural because the remote and forbidding places of the world are Land Rover’s home turf. Since 1948 the Land Rover brand has been the choice of hardy souls who had to get somewhere that was mostly nowhere, anywhere on the planet. The location is also absurd because we all know that, at least in America, 90 percent of these vehicles will be sold to your rich neighbor for his hot wife to drive to her Bikram yoga class. Most Discovery Sports will … [Read more...] about First drive: 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport
Not everyone needs to save fuel. For those who can afford an uncompromising blend of off-road performance and luxury, the Land Rover Range Rover really is in a class of one. For 2013, Land Rover is giving this brute a refresh. After the shockingly different Evoque, the company obviously felt that major changes to its flagship model would be too much. The 2013 Range Rover retains its classic boxy profile, but with a few adjustments. The front end used to be upright, but now it’s more rounded to bring the Range Rover in line with the Evoque. The formerly square headlights and taillights now have little tails, again, copied from the Evoque. The 2013 model still looks like a Range Rover, and that’s why the Evoque styling cues don’t exactly jibe with the rest of the body. The vents just below the headlights look out of place too, like they were stuck on at the last minute to make the massive front bumper seem smaller.Styling aside, the 2013 Range Rover gets several … [Read more...] about 2013 Land Rover Range Rover gets tweaked styling and a lighter, aluminum body
Land Rover is gearing up to replace its iconic Defender with a new model, but in the meantime fans are still in love with this old school off-roader. To keep the Defender fresh, and possibly to capitalize on some of that love, Land Rover cooked up this Defender XTech Special Edition. On the outside, the XTech Special Edition package was meant to improve the looks of this already-capable truck. XTech Special Editions only come in Orkney Grey or Nara Bronze, which is exclusive to this model. The metallic colors contrast a Santorini Black roof and black accents; the headlight surrounds, bumpers, door sills, and wheels are also blacked out.On the back is a Defender badge in a militaristic stencil typeface. The overall effect is that of a Land Rover customized to suit the tastes of people who shop at Urban Outfitters. The interior of the XTech Special Edition also gets a few tweaks. Taking a page from Land Rover’s newer, more luxurious models, the seats are covered in Ebony and Almond … [Read more...] about Land Rover Defender XTech Special Edition: How special is it?
