How to Use Different Wallpapers on Multiple Monitors in Windows 7
So you’ve just unpacked that spiffy new monitor, and it sits fresh and new on your desk putting your other little displays to shame. Now you have to give it some sartorial splendor: a kick-ass wallpaper from the online repository of your choice. But now comes the conundrum—what if you want to use different images on different screens? If you want something a bit more automated (that requires extra … [Read more...] about How to Use Different Wallpapers on Multiple Monitors in Windows 7
Dual Monitors: Use a Different Wallpaper on Each Desktop
Note: I’ve written an updated article for both Vista and XP Multi-monitor displays are becoming more and more common. Let’s face it, computers are so powerful these days that we can run more applications at a time than we have monitor space for… so if you haven’t tried it, it’s time to upgrade to a dual-monitor display. The immediate issue that you will notice is that the wallpaper displays the same image on both screens. This is especially annoying when you have a laptop and a second monitor, each running at different resolutions, because the second screen will have a “squashed” version of the picture. Enter Desktop Items…. you can create a web item and put a picture on it to cover the second monitor. Here’s how to do it. First, you’ll want to go to Display Properties, click Customize Desktop, and then the Web tab, like so: Now you will want to click the New button, and you’ll be presented with a dialog prompting you to select either a webpage or wallpaper. … [Read more...] about Dual Monitors: Use a Different Wallpaper on Each Desktop

Netflix’s anti-password sharing will force you to sign in once a month – or get blocked
Audio player loading… New details of Netflix’s anti-password sharing measures have appeared online, revealing how the platform plans to crack down on users. The newly found information was discovered on Netflix’s US Help Center and confirmed by The Streamable (opens in new tab) on January 31; however, that page has since been taken down. As of this writing, the Help Center has reverted back to its previous state. Fortunately, a copy of the rules can still be found on the Wayback Machine (opens in new tab) , a website that takes “screenshots” of the internet for the sake of posterity. According to the reports, “Netflix accounts are still shareable, but only within one household.” Anybody from outside your home won’t be able to use that account and will be told to create with their own. The platform will also require users to log into their Netflix account via their household’s Wi-Fi, open the app, and “watch something at least once every 31 days.” … [Read more...] about Netflix’s anti-password sharing will force you to sign in once a month – or get blocked
Tracking and combatting our current mass extinction
At various times in its past, the Earth has succeeded in killing off most of its inhabitants. Although the impact that killed the non-avian dinosaurs and many other species gets most of the attention, the majority of the mass extinctions we're aware of were driven by geological processes and the changes in climate that they triggered. Unfortunately, based on the current rate at which animals are vanishing for good, we're currently in the midst of another mass extinction, this one driven by a single species: humans. (And many of the extinctions occurred before we started getting serious about messing with the climate.) This week's edition of Science contains a series of articles tracking the pace of the extinction and examining our initial efforts to contain it. Extinction and “defaunation” Estimating the total number of animal species is a challenging task, but numbers range from roughly five to 10 million. Of those, we seem to be exterminating about 10,000 to 60,000 every … [Read more...] about Tracking and combatting our current mass extinction
Dorian Nakamoto, fingered as Bitcoin creator, wants to sue
In March, Newsweek came roaring back to the print world with a tech-themed cover story . The publication said it had discovered "the face behind Bitcoin"—an unemployed engineer living an unassuming life in a Los Angeles suburb. Within days of publication, critics began pointing out that the magazine's case that Dorian Nakamoto was actually Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto was based on circumstantial evidence . The 65-year-old Dorian Nakamoto, who has no background in cryptography at all, denied the story after it was published. Newsweek and author Leah McGrath Goodman did not apologize and instead doubled down on their thesis, putting out a statement that "the facts as reported point toward Mr. Nakamoto's role in the founding of Bitcoin." Further Reading The colossal arrogance of Newsweek ’s Bitcoin “scoop” Now, Nakamoto and his lawyer Ethan Kirschner have made clear they'd like to sue Newsweek over the story—but they need more money to do it. The two … [Read more...] about Dorian Nakamoto, fingered as Bitcoin creator, wants to sue
