ISTANBUL -- A newspaper close to the Turkish president published photos Wednesday of what it said was a 15-member "assassination squad" allegedly sent to target Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who went missing after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul last week. Turkish officials suspect Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate, allegations rejected by Saudi Arabia, which says he left the premises. Turkey has been given permission to search the diplomatic post, an extraordinary development that shows the increasing international pressure the kingdom faces over Khashoggi's disappearance. The report by the Sabah newspaper, which is close to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, published images of the men apparently taken at passport control. It said they checked into two hotels in Istanbul on Oct. 2, the day Khashoggi went missing, and left later that day. Khashoggi had written a series of columns for the Washington Post that were critical of Saudi Arabia's assertive Crown … [Read more...] about Jamal Khashoggi disappearance: Turkey newspaper shows photos of purported Saudi “assassination squad”

BEIRUT -- Turkish authorities on Monday requested access to the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul for a second time since the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi last week. Khashoggi vanished after a visit to consulate, and his friends and allies suspect he was killed inside the building. Turkish officials claim the Washington Post contributor was slain at the consulate and that his body was later removed. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not confirm the alleged killing, saying he would await the result of an investigation. Saudi Arabia has insisted that Khashoggi left the Istanbul consulate and disappeared somewhere after brief visit there. Neither side has offered evidence to back its argument, in spite of the fact that the consulate is surrounded by security cameras, inside and out. A Turkish official said Monday that Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Turkey had been summoned to the ministry to request Riyadh's cooperation in an investigation over Khashoggi's … [Read more...] about Jamal Khashoggi disappearance: Turkey asks to search Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul
