In brief: An apparent bug has been discovered in the motherboard management software from several leading board vendors that makes it incredibly easy to fry your X3D-based AMD CPU. We do not yet have a timetable for when safeguards will be installed so until then, be very careful when tinkering around in motherboard management software with these chips. One mistake and poof, your CPU could become a shiny desk ornament. Igor's Lab recently stumbled upon the issue while tinkering around in MSI Center. Using an MSI B550 Unify board with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor, Igor noticed the software was seemingly detecting the chip as a standard Ryzen 5xxx, which does not have 3D vertically stacked L3 cache. The extra cache is known to boost gaming performance but its physical presence also negatively impacts heat dissipation, which is one reason why it ships with slower clock speeds than the standard 5800X. With the software unable to detect an X3D chip, it treats it like a standard … [Read more...] about Motherboard software bug can accidentally kill AMD Ryzen X3D CPUs

Zombies and Prosthetic Limbs? The Many Uses of 3D Scanners
Ever wonder why the zombies in the film "World War Z" appear so lifelike? It's not just makeup — some of them were created with the aid of high-tech scanning technology. The company Artec, based in Luxembourg, develops handheld 3D scanners that have been used for everything from Hollywood special effects to the development of prosthetic limbs. The technology makes it possible to create a digital model of an object in the real world, which can then be manipulated with computer design software, said Leonid Volkov, chief business development officer at Artec Group. [ Gallery: 3D Scans in Hollywood and Hospitals ] If, for instance, a company such as Lucas Films, Disney or Pixar (all Artec customers) is working on new 3D animated movie, and the producers want a glass of water to appear in the animation, "you have just two choices — scan it or draw it from scratch, which is much more expensive and time consuming," Volkov told Live Science. The makers of " World … [Read more...] about Zombies and Prosthetic Limbs? The Many Uses of 3D Scanners

The VR games and apps I’ve been playing in February 2023
February 2023 has been a much better month for me in terms of the VR games and apps that I've downloaded and played compared with January . Using my Oculus Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro I've had an absolute blast playing the VR hit The Last Clockwinder and also Barbaria , a recent addition to the Quest platform. Unfortunately, I can't say my experience working in VR using Meta's Horizon Workrooms app was as enjoyable (the software definitely needs some work still). Read on for my thoughts on these titles. And make sure to check out our picks for the best VR games and the best Oculus Quest 2 games to get some more recommendations of the VR games and apps you need to download. The Last Clockwinder The Last Clockwinder is the most involved auto clicker you will ever play and a fantastic puzzle game on the Quest platform, Steam VR, and soon the PlayStation VR 2. You’ve returned to an ancient clock tower built inside a giant tree you once called home … [Read more...] about The VR games and apps I’ve been playing in February 2023
PCVR fans need to download the next Meta Quest Pro update as soon as possible
If you’ve been disappointed by the Meta Quest Pro’s visuals when using it for PCVR then you’ll likely want to download the headset’s next software update, as it should greatly improve your experience. One of the biggest updates to the Quest Pro compared with the Oculus Quest 2 is its improved display. As we highlighted in our Meta Quest Pro review , its miniLED LCD panels offer 37% more pixels per inch, 10% more pixels per degree, and 75% better contrast than the Quest 2’s – with the contrast improvement afforded by an effect called local dimming. However, local dimming has been an opt-in feature, so developers have to enable it for their Quest Store applications. This opt-in system has meant that PCVR software – which Quest Pro owners can access by using a Link Cable or Air Link – is unable to take advantage of the Quest Pro display’s improved contrast. Thankfully, that looks set to change in system update V51. According to users in Meta’s Public Test Channel … [Read more...] about PCVR fans need to download the next Meta Quest Pro update as soon as possible
GM kills more than CarPlay support, it kills choice
A long while back, Toyota told me it didn't want to give up interior real estate to Apple’s CarPlay. The automaker felt that losing that space to the tech company would be a huge mistake. Fast forward a few years, and after what I assume were some internal struggles, it caved and now you can get CarPlay and Android Auto on your fancy new Highlander, Prius, Tacoma, or Camry. It seemed like a silly decision had been reversed. Now it’s GM’s turn to go down the same path. Today, news dropped that GM would be phasing out CarPlay support in future EVs . In its partnership with Google, it hopes that all the features you get from mirroring your iPhone can be replaced with an Android Automotive feature . GM, like Toyota before it, wants to control the digital real estate in its vehicles. It’s a revenue-based and walled-garden (ironically against Apple) decision that will cost them. Software-driven vehicles should be about choice. Instead, GM is making a short-sighted decision based on a … [Read more...] about GM kills more than CarPlay support, it kills choice
Twitter posts the code it claims determines which tweets people see, and why
Twitter has made good on one of CEO Elon Musk's many promises , posting on a Friday afternoon what it claims is the code for its tweet recommendation algorithm on GitHub . The code, posted under a GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 , contains numerous insights as to what factors make a tweet more or less likely to show up in users' timelines. In a blog post accompanying the code release , Twitter's engineering team (under no particular byline) notes that the system for determining which "top Tweets that ultimately show up on your device's For You timeline" is "composed of many interconnected services and jobs." Each time a Twitter home screen is refreshed, Twitter pulls "the best 1,500 Tweets from a pool of hundreds of millions," the post states. The largest source of those tweets are "In-Network Sources," or users someone follows. The top tweets from that pile are ranked on the likelihood of a user's engagement with that tweet's author; the more likely, the more … [Read more...] about Twitter posts the code it claims determines which tweets people see, and why
